People have DF's all the way up to 17 inch rims and up. They have the dfferent sizes cause people like to run them on the track and people like me just for everyday driving dont care as long as the rim and tire lasts if you drill a pothole.
If you take the height if a rim and a low profile tire they are about the same as the 15 or 14 inch wheel and tires with a taller side wall . The problems I believe people are running into is the size of the tires and the offset of the wheels causing rubbing. I had 17 x7 offset +40mm with 215/40/17 tires. The only rubbing was in the back. The outside of the sidewall barely rubber the inside of the wheel well.

I too have 17 x 7 offset +40 with 215/40/17 tires and the only rubbing I had was the same as slvryaris. However rubbing only occured when I had a full car. When driving solo I haven't had rubbing problems on hard turns, deep dips, or high speed bumps. I'm scheduled for an alighment next week(been lazy) so hopefully that small problem will be fixed.

everything depends on what you like, what you can afford, and what kind of driving you plan on doing with them... click on my signature for some tire options from 14-20 inch wheel sizes

here I got the picture for 16 x 7 SSR Type C Gunmetallic
Tire Size Michelin Pilot Preceda II 205/50/16. I think its a perfect combination.
But for myself, I would preffer to use DF210 and 15inch on 195/55/15 tires. or better use Sustec Pro NF
but its all up 2 u.

there is going to be many factors involved to get a great setup...
for example http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7489
With RIMS.....the bottom line here is
--get as close as you can to your tire height
--get an offset that wont let the rim sit to far in or out the wheel well
--get lowered to your desired height...
after lowereing.... and if there is rubbing
--roll fender
--the rubbing is due to a high bound/rebound on the spring so get aftermarket shocks to stiffen the ride
--rubbing could be in the well due to wrong offset and its hitting the inside of the wheel well
and there you have a lowered car with the rims you want
and there are other / many other sulutions and factors .... youy can even go extreme and have a WIDE-body vitz
