Stupid question. Why does toyota only sell Yaris diesel in Europe? I want the 1.4 D-4D. Any chance I could get this engine. Just wondering.

Great question. In the USA our new emission standards are to high. Looks like we will only get the Jetta diesel in 2008. I wish we could get a Yaris diesel here. Not sure what the deal is with Aus.

I work for Cummins Inc. that makes diesel engines for the Dodge Ram trucks and we announced a while back that we are making 4 and 6 or 6 and 8 liter engines to go into light duty trucks and possibly cars. They are currently working on the facility in Columbus,IN and they have already ran both engines and they have far surpassed the emissions standards.

Would love to see some diesel cars in the USA. I have my 2006 Ford Powerstroke sitting in the driveway, collecting dust. It gets good mileage for such a huge truck. I think the Yaris could get 55-60 MPG.

It'd be nice to be able to run ethanol in our cars too or have a hybrid version. For reasonable money that is.

yeah diesels rock, they are extremely popular in Europe... Better mileage, cheaper cost, what's not to like, especially with the newer generations of engines which are more powerful and cleaner... Friend of mine here recently got a BMW 520d, with an ECU reflash it comes close to 200hp, and over 400ft-lbs of torque, when he steps on it, it just rips...

Toyota does make a hybrid, about the same size as our cars. it costs 2X.
You would have to drive for like 200K miles to make up the cost difference.
Ethanol costs more, has less energy density, gets worse MPG and takes about 2 gallons of gas to make 1 of ethanol (dont quote me on the gallons, you get the idea)

Diesels kick ass. If there was a diesel VW Rabbit coming soon, I would not be in a Yaris now. The build quality is lower (for VW's, not diesels in general), but the mpg and power potential are so much higher...
