5. Toyota Yaris
Four-Door
SCORE: 132
ConsumerReports' accident avoidance: Worse than average
Even though the Yaris has impressive fuel efficiency, a nicely designed interior, high expected reliability, and a number of other positive attributes, Consumer Reports' John Linkov says that the Yaris can't be recommended, "because its emergency handling is quite tail-happy and the driver could get out of control very quickly." And to make an especially dangerous combination, the Yaris four-door performs badly in both major side-crash tests, with three stars from NHTSA and a "Poor" rating from the IIHS.

Suspension mods for handling maybe should be 1st priority on everyones DO-LIST!

The results are for the Yaris 4-door (sedan) yet they picture the liftback.
Side airbags should be standard.
i'm glad my liftback has VCD. but no side-bag :frown:
i'm not worried about loosing the tail end in the Yaris, don't know why the pencil pushers would make it an issue.

I look at it this way- 20 years ago the Yaris would be on the safest list. It's all a crap shoot anyway. Just don't drive like an ass and watch what's going on!

This is a terrible article by a company that should stick to financial dealings. I think it's complete BS.

thing is...these people compare cars to other high-end cars. Even though they say they sub-classed it and stuff. Like the saying goes....its the driver and never the car. Treat it well and it will do the same for you. They probably were turning from left and right really quickly and fast and braking at the same time. I've turned pretty good with this car, and w/ its height that high, its pretty damn good at cornering, and lowered......its a bliss~

Wow. Thats really retarted.
If you read the rest of the list, its very, very obvious that any car built before 2006 thats not a 6000lb beast is in the top 10. My WRX doesn't have side airbags so it'd be on the list too...

Like the Ford Ranger, Nissan Xterra and Dodge Dakota?

That's why we bought a bright RED Yaris...and we have the side airbags, that helps.

?? Mine has nine airbags??? SRS front and rear curtain shield airbags, front side and drivers knee etc. also has ABS + EBD + BA .....only danger is the air bags burning my face when it activates but I hope that day will not happen.

Crash test results don't speak to me at all. She could be #1 on that list for all I care. I'm more concerned with fuel efficiency at this point. It's pretty certain that a car needs gas to function. It's not certain if I'll get into a serious accident with this car. Yes, I enjoy living dangerously.

Hatch Yaris here in Canada, doesn't have side curtain airbag, even as an option. Sedan Yaris has it in option, but only with all possible options together. Still trying to understand Toyota's mentality.... :iono:
Yaris has indeed a lack a stability in emergency handling, the car is very light - especially the rear half, and also the rear suspension is too soft. However, one nigh on the highway I almost crashed into a deer. As I saw it at the very last moment in the front of the car (was running across the highway) I had to violently turn the steering. Well, the car managed to stay on the road without rear sliding! Only the tires were non factory (changed for Michelin).

you said you were concerned with fuel efficiency, then later in the same paragraph mention that you like living dangerously.
just found that a bit ironic is all.

I did an emergency maneuver in my Yaris while taking my wife to the airport one morning. It was me, my wife, and my 2 kids. A 4X4 wooden board fell off a truck carrying a bulldozer or something fell into the road on the highway right ahead of me. I did the fastest high speed lane change I've ever tried, and successfully avoided the wood, not so for the SUV behind me. This is with the stock suspension and stock tires. The Yaris performed this beautifully. I think they are on crack, or it only pertains to the sedan.

The sedan performs perfect on high speed turns and what not. I love mine. Highly speed turns I feel the back end but that is like 80 in a 90 degree turn type stuff I am talking about.

I drove my S during the winter and had no issues with the car and its suspension...the only thing that sucked was the stock tires, which I am hoping to change before this winter season.

In Europe the Yaris is one of the safest cars in it's class.
The Euro-NCAP tested it.
My car is a Yaris 1.4 D-4d Linea Sol and has 7 airbags.

Gee, I made it through several years of rag top jeeps with no seat belts let alone air bags. Hell, my first couple pickup trucks had nice steel dashes and non safety glass. I guess when your time is up it really doesn't matter what you are driving. I do agree that all the safety features are nice, but you still are safer in your car then you are eating shit food for your short stay on this earth.
