View Full Version : Deafening at highway speeds

I have an 07 sedan, and one thing I noticed right away was the gawd-awful racket that the wind makes when driving down the highway, with the front windows up and the rear ones down. It creates a weird little vortex that makes your eardrums implode. And, evil monkeys come out of it

Yeah I noticed that too. The first time it happened was when my grandson rolled his window down in the back. It hurt my ears the noise was so bad. Had to have him roll it back up. At first I thought there was something going wrong with the Yarii. Still don't know what causes it. :iono:

i think they call it buffeting but i forget. weathertechs will fix that.

the wind buffeting is lessened if you put one of the front windows down just a bit.

I have weathertechs on my yarii. Still get this sound!

the 3dr liftback will do the same thing if only one of the windows is down all or most of the way. Crack another window and it will stop. My mom's old '81 Corolla sedan would do the same thing.

yeah, i noticed that a few months back. i also noticed that you get a nice breeze with the right passenger window a little down, and the driver-side window a little down too. all the other windows are closed.

hehe this is why i close the windows on the highway and just use the a/c

really? i guess it depends on the car. my audi had bad buffeting but it went away with weathertechs installed.

Most if not all cars can eventually get this effect, you want deafining?

Try the new Tundra double cab(not crew cab) with both rear windows down, I thought my head was going to implode.

same here. sounds like a helicopter is landing in my back seat.

Yeh, every car does this effect. You need to slightly open another window up to eliminate the effect.

That is the true answer! And the mpg is probably better anyway.

Exactly... all cars I've ever driven in do this. Having just the back windows open creates a vacuum in the front.

I noticed it's mentioned in the owners manual!

Dangit, I've seen an article on the net that explains the physics of it and why almost all cars do it, but now I can't find the blasted thing. It had diagrams and everything! It's got something to do with the way the sound waves of the wind buffeting travel through the car... they get caught in some kind of loop that dramatically amplifies them. Wish I could find that article again! :hitcomputer:

Thats what you get for having 4 windows

cabin pressure is what ever altitude your at, here on Long Island we are at sea evel which equals atmos pressure at 14.7. so when your driving your car the outside wind created by the car pushing against air causes difference in pressure , so crack open a window and your cabin pressure seeks the lower pressure so your hearing your cabin pressure rushing out which is loud

Chopper sound describes it nicely. However, my Civic Sedan doesn't make the same noise when the rear windows are open. So, it's probably specific to the Yaris's or other cars with similar design.

NO big deal, I just have the rear closed and the front fronts cracked open. With the back closed, I find that the fronts do a great job at keeping noise to a minimum when you don't want to use the AC. A sunroof might be nice, if it can increase air flow in the interior without increasing noise level.

I just ask my friends if they wanna hear some low bass and they are like suuure. They had no idea about the window thing and the guy in the passenger seat kept yelling at me to roll it up with his hands over his ears.

Every car does it, my Civic sedan did - you need to be driving ~90kmh to hear it. Also depending on the atm. pressure where you live, that's a factor. Read the above posts.

I have a 3 doors Hatchback and the same thing happen... But in my car it is because of the seatbelt that is shaking under the strong wind at high speed. So i have to close my window halfway to stop the thing...

The real question is why would anyone want their windows down at highway speeds? Once you reach 50mph, the drag created by the windows uses more fuel than having AC on.

I've got a 2000 Civic Sedan, perhaps the less boxy and newer Civic's have more of a boom when the back is open. In the Yaris, I only need to be doing about 50km/hr to get it boom in the back, which isn't the case for my Civic.

plus, at that point, the wind blowing against your face just doesn't feel good anymore.
