Yeah I live just north of that bridge. Crazy! I used to take that bridge to work everyday! Luckily I don't have to take it but its still unfortunant. Ironically they were working on it. This is really going to screw up traffic bacause that's like a main artery to the city. There are other ways but that goes to the heart of it. I was going to see my dad the day it happend but I told my mom its not worth it, there was just too much going on with emergency and traffic we didn't need to add to it. So hopefully today I can see him, he's in the hospital, but not because of this, different reason.
My condolences to the suvivors and families.

Actually, I wrote about it this morning:
"The girl and I were watching coverage of the bridge that collapsed in the Twin Cities last night. It looked like something out of a movie. I know this may sound morbid but I imagined myself on that bridge when it fell. I thought about what I would have done (if I hadn't got hurt). I came to the conclusion that I would be trying to help people. I know I can say that now because I obviously wasn't there and being there makes it real. But, I know myself very well. I would be down there hunting for people. I always say how people are assholes and this society is full of a bunch of tools (and I haven't changed my mind about that) but never did I say I wanted those aforementioned assholes to die or get hurt. So yeah, I would be down there on the water banks searching. Maybe even inside of the Mississippi river doing what I could. This is just a horrible ordeal and I pray that many more people are found and that the death rate stays at a low number. Six isn't low when it comes to death though. I wonder how it happened. The news reported that the bridge had been under inspection in 2005 and 2006. How does something like this "just happen?" I know how, but to say what I think would make everyone think I'm heartless."

I just heard about this on the radio. The mayor of Minneapolis said there are still people missing and a couple dozen cars in the water. :frown:

You're not alone, Death, in imagining what you'd do in the same situation. I've lost track of how many scenarios I imagined after the Virginia tech shootings.
Damn, I wanted a piece of that guy. :slice:
As for the bridge.... I'd just die. I'm terrified of only 2 things: heights, and drowning (I don't swim). You drop me off a bridge, and I'll be dead of a heart attack before I hit the water.

I thought 7 had died :frown: that's what it reported. either way, it's so sad. There were 79 injured from what I read but there are still people missing. I have several friends who live in Minnesota. At least they don't live in Minneapolis and both don't have cars to drive onto that bridge. Just hope they weren't in a car with someone else.
I also imagined what I'd do but I really wouldn't know. I might just get so scared I freeze up and not even be able to save myself.

oh my gosh.. but she's ok, I assume. That'd be crazy to just get off the bridge and see it collapse in your rearview mirror.

this is really disturbing to me, these structures have to be better designed/maintained/inspected.
this shit should just not be happening.

I wonder if any Yarii were present on the bridge at the time of its collapse.

they said they would need to invest 1500 million $$ in the US in all the structure .. same here in quebec they are rebuilding almost all the big viaduct..gouvernement is lazy.. and it cost life

YR if society attempted to figure out people like the VT shooter instead of writing them off in society you'd see less of this. Im not defending the asshole at all but he continually went off about how people treated him or ignored him (especially girls).
And then we all saw how he 'was a quiet person' and didnt say anything. No one in society ever attempted to engage him....
Back to topic....what a tragedy. I freak out whenever im on any bridge sitting in traffic. You ever feel how much a bridge shakes? Unnerving to say the least. In Atlanta I avoided 'Spaghetti Junction' (I 285 and I 85 merge) like the plague because its like 10 storeys high.
What a way to go...being pinned in your car under a massive piece of steel and concrete.
I hope the Feds are reevaluating their bridge 'assessments'. If Homeland Security has any role in it theres no hope and were all doomed.

is it true that the victims of the montreal collapse cannot sue the provincial government for damages due to quebec's no-fault insurance?
i heard a report on cbc radio but only caught a small part of it, so wasnt' sure i heard correctly.

It depends on whether is classifed as a car accident or not. If it's a 'car accident' they're SOL.

After reading some of these replies I am reminded of the Huey P. Long bridge in New Orleans. I am from the N.O. area and have been on that bridge many times. The damn thing sways left to right. To make matters worse, there is a train track that runs across the top. Scary shit.

I thought I saw somewhere that there are bridges that intentionally sway side to side .. that's kinda weird and scary. I wouldn't go on it.
Anywho, I saw on the news somewhere that people are saying that IL, the gov't has been diverting like $2 billion of the money that's suppose to go into repairing roads and bridges into government related functions. Not sure how true it is since it is fox news i saw it on after all.
