Yaris S-Sedan, Auto.. so far only up to 90, but I wasn't trying to max it out or anything... so it will probably go higher.

I guess any question asked has some importance to some but I don't think anybody buying a Yaris is real concerned about top speed. This is not a high performance car BTW..... LOL

Unless you live where Autobahns or limitless roads exist, then top speed really doesn't matter... does it?

It caught me by surprise, but I looked over an saw 80ish on the speedo. Keep in mind, I backed right off once I noticed it, because it was only 20mins after taking delivery! Thats one way to break 'em in, lol.
It just rides so nice for a little car, it never feels like your driving fast.
Yea, sorry this actually didnt answer your question at all!!

Car and Driver (or maybe it was Road and Track) did a review of the sedan and stated that the top speed was limited to 113mph.
Ben
Just academic discussion, I believe you can get a hint from the stock tires that come with the car. In other words, the car's top speed cannot usually exceed the tires' maximum allowable speed, but should be quite close to it.
Sorry for not having a solid answer.
Edit(additional information entered on June 26 06)): S-rated tires can stand a speed of up to 180 km/hr, T-rated ones up to 190 km/hr, H-rated ones up to 210 km/hr, and V-rated ones up to 240 km/hr. A T-rated speed limit of 190 km/hr is about 118 miles/hr. My stock tires are T-rated. I think the maximum speed of my stock HB should be more than the S-rated limit of 180 km (112 miles)/hr but less than the T-rated limit of 190 km (118 miles)/hr. Anyway, it's fast enough for me:smile:.

my yaris seems to hit a sweet spot at 80 miles an hour when I'm cruising on highways. I really don't want to go any faster.

i've had mine up to 110 mph or so, never hit the limit yet. this car does like to hover around the 80 mph spot though. so easy to stay there on the highway.

a bit repetitive..but got mine up to 110 then noticed i was in traffic..:) car still handled decent at that speed, so really should be no problem at normal highway speeds, was just trying to see what the limit would be, but could not get to it..

I took a 3hr road trip and had to be at a certain place at a certain time....
My Yaris is a hatch 5spd and I drove the majority of the way at 150km/h and during a couple stretches hit 170-180km/h. There was a bit of wind and it didnt feel to sound at that speed so I slowed back down.
I had to make the trip to Vancouver airport to pickup my lip kit before customs closed. Took the 'Coke'. I dont typically drive anywhere near this speed mind you.

brung mine to 115mph. but i only did that once when i first got it on a clear highway
Hi folks, I have just found enough evidence from my stock tires to show that the max. speed of my HB shoud be somewhere between 180 km (112 miles) to 190 km (118 miles) per hour. If interested, please roll back to see my last post which has been edited to show additional information.

I didn't hit the li limiter at 110 mph but didn't feel comfotable at that speed. it is smooth @ 80 tho.

got mine up to 160 km/h a coulpe weeks ago on the 400.
It handled very well at that speed! i was impressed actually

I took mine to around 105 on I80 going east from MN to Maine....hit it once and backed down just to see on clear road....felt nice and smooth, but as others have said...the car is possessed and wills itself to be in the 80 mph area.

last time i went past 100 i was on a turn and it kind of helped me go faster out of it and i have got past 120 so i know theres no engine cut out
also if you do take speed limiter out i think you break waranty
something you should know for the first time you go past 100 be careful with tires there kind of touchey
Ok,I got to 115 on my stock tires,I was on a flat part of the higway,no hills,I havnt tried to beat any records yet,but Ive heard the limiter is set at 118.when I was at 105moh it took about 15sec to get to 115,so 118 may be right,it didnt have much power at that speed, but rpms were around 5000,so it had some headroom, just not enough torque, dont get me wrong,it handled awsome(that was before any mods,I have plenty now) at that speed. But I cant beleive the 120mph man,but maybe,I just find it hard to beleive, because Ive been close. And if you hit it one more time, take a pic,not just proof to me,but maybe as a trophy for you, like this for me,until next time.Ima wait till I get my new headers, exhaust and grounding kit before I try it again,I wanna see what improvments all that money gets.:burnrubber:

About 185 here too, but I don't think there was a speed limiter, we just ran out of straight road

115mph here as well..... I want to get rid of that damn speedlimiter.... or use a programmer, or something I can return to stock for warranty issues

Ι have reached the speed of 187km/h and there were at about 2000rpm more.
Katana,were you going down hill.
155 KMS/h (110 MPH), manual, it feels OK for me actually...
Does anyone know if the North American Yaris can stay above 180 km/hr for hours without putting excessive wear and tear on the engine?. Personally, I think the car can handle about 160km/hr on a long distance trip but anything higher might be a problem. My old 98 Civic Hatch could cruise all day long at 180km/hr, it'd be nice if the Yaris could do the same.

YES
The engine can run at any rpm below red line as long as you want.
Providing you are using an oil to keep up with the high demands of a racing engine and spark plugs and cooling system that works efficiently enough to remove and exchange the heat.
But that being said any engine will wear faster with higher rpms there is no getting around it.
running it at about 2X the normal cruise speed will wear the engine out in 1/2 the time.
For instance a car that runs 500,000km at 3000 rpm may only last 250,000km running at 6000 rpm.
Many cars put a rev limit at the redline to prevent engine over revving.
Motor cycles and ATV on the otherhand often have a redline much lower then an actual preset rev limit. Like my bike for instance has a redline of 6500rpm with a rev limit of 8500 rpm.
Redline = highest peak Hp in the power curve. Shifting at or before redline will usually always yeild the fastest eceleration
Rev limit is a preset ignition or fuel cut off to prevent an engine from revving too high and causing engine damage. Over revving causes valve float where the valves actually stay open and come into contact with the pistons, over revving is also hard on rods and rod bearings

aaah thatnks for that info, I was wondering myself, how an engine's redline and rev limit were defined..
So if one was to improve an engine so as to run safely at high RPMs, that would mainly involve beefing up the valve springs, as well as weight balancing the pistons and rods to eliminate vibration, right?

You got it!
Lighter, stronger components if you plan on pushing past the engines design limits, along with timing changes and fuel management.
With a stock internal engine run a 40 or 50W synthetic
Replace the engine coolant with Evans NPG or "engine ice" with remote bypass turn on switch
Drop one heat range colder with NGK iriduim plugs
and the stock engine could run at redline as long as you want with no problems.

Makes sense.
In the case of my 98 Civic Hatch, I was driving near to redline from Kinston to Toronto (2.5hr drive) and I ended up cracking the head-gasket at the end of the trip (It started to leak air into the coolant). But I think it was other factors that lead to the gasket failure... There was already 20,000km on the engine oil (regular filters but Mobel-1 oil), coolant reservoir was empty at start of trip (but radiator was almost full), and radiator had 300,000km on it and the bottom half of the fins were all flatten from stone chips. Oh well, the car seemed indestructible, so I started to neglect on the maintenance :bonk:
One good thing that came out of the episode, it was the motivation I needed to land me a Yaris.
Since I'm not using synthetic (or heavy oil) and I don't know the capabilities of the stock cooling system, I better keep a cap on things for now.
