View Full Version : Group Buy: Carbon Fiber hoods

cali yaris

Ok, here it is folks. I need FIVE to sign up for a group buy to get this low price! (more than five is fine).

I'll update the list on this post as people want to sign on for this deal.
NOTE: They will ship within two weeks after five people sign up.

This is a very good quality hood with excellent fitment. The cf weave is straight and the gel coat is glossy and smooth. The underside of the hood is painted black and has imperfections. I would show my car with this hood as is, but I personally would like to finish and paint the underside white for my own car. The hood latches firmly and nicely (I've seen hoods that were weak in this respect).

I don't know what UPS shipping will be. I figure a box of about 10-12 pounds, approx. 3' x 4'. I will post some average shipping prices tomorrow.

I installed this with a friend in about 5 minutes. I did weigh both hoods:
Stock Hood: 12 lbs. 10 oz.
CF Hood: 7 lbs. 14 oz., saving almost 5 pounds.

Here's the good part, it's normally $360:

$325 EACH + UPS Ground shipping.

Here are a few pictures so you can see the gaps, the weave and the underside. If you'd like to see something in particular, just ask. Note that I have NOT polished or finished this hood, it's straight out of the bubble wrap and onto my car! Glamour shots to come later...

I can get custom colors made, but that would not be part of the Group Buy -- ok?

yrsdrgn
08-06-2007, 07:57 PM
I'm interested 100% ^^ I think i'll just stay with the traditional black carbon fiber like the one you have

yrsdrgn
08-06-2007, 08:07 PM
curious question, how would you polish up a carbon fiber hood? wash then wax it up to a nice shine?

Vanderkitten
08-06-2007, 08:10 PM
I remember seeing shipping was $135 or something on your website, and after I changed my pants from laughing so hard, I was wondering what the REAL shipping price will be?

(EDIT: SORRY FOR SOUNDING LIKE A DICK... BUT I HATE THAT SHIT)
(EDIT 2: SORRY AGAIN, I JUST CHECKED AND IT'S $165 SHIPPING)

yrsdrgn
08-06-2007, 08:15 PM
I think that the shipping is like that as an estimate that's why it says to call to order on the site. I may be wrong but that's just a guess

cali yaris
08-06-2007, 09:36 PM
The shipping that got posted on the site was for drop-shipping tC hoods from the factory, and they charge ME $145.

I can fit a Yaris hood into packaging that I already have, so I know it will be a LOT cheaper to go pick them up and do it myself.

As stated, I will post sample shipping rates (from me in CA to OR, TX and NY for example) -- so you can keep your clean pants on.

yrsdrgn
08-06-2007, 09:46 PM
alright here's a question, if you've delt with seibon's carbon fiber would you say the carbon fiber hood you have on your car is better in quality or about the same?

curious question cuz they too make a cf hood

tacsniper
08-06-2007, 10:22 PM
I am in... I have my own UPS account, if I give you my UPS account # can you have UPS bill me for it and declare the value to like $150 to avoid heavy custom charges? Also if there are any other Canadian buyers here, we can have them all ship to one place in Canada and distribute them through Canada Post if we can save shipping that way.

Question 1: I can see part of the inside in one of your pictures...
http://www.g2autosports.com/images/cf-hood/yaris-4.jpg
will water leak in through the gap?

Question 2: Can I have the bottom of the hood painted white before shipping it to me?

mandriu
08-06-2007, 10:23 PM
um,does it work with sedan?

whooppee777
08-06-2007, 10:28 PM
nope doesnt fit the sedan. different headlights and junk.

seibon makes a CF hood for the sedan though. like $535 though

i'm interested, do u have a deadline or will it just end when u get enough people? and how do we pay?

08-06-2007, 11:58 PM
how much does it weigh Vs. stock?

"I installed this with a friend in about 5 minutes. I did weigh both hoods:

hope that helps

cali yaris

yrsdrgn: I would say the cf top is as good as a Seibon, and the underside not as good.

tacsniper: Yes, I can set up the shipment with your UPS account. Although, I ship to Canada every day and use USPS Global Express. It's cheaper and the duties are a lot lower. I won't include an invoice and we call the shipment a "Commercial Sample" to help you out as best we can.

1. I think the stock hood has a gap too, doesn't it? I'm not sure about water drainage, maybe someone else can answer this one.

2. I would have to get a body shop to paint it for you, so I'd prefer not to do that for now. You can probably get a better deal locally and if you have a problem it's easier to deal with?

DMart: No deadline, but I'd like to get these ordered pretty soon. When we have enough people, you can pay by PayPal, credit card (by calling me) or sending in a check (but it will have to clear first).

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 01:23 AM
about the polish - I use the same wax on my CF pieces as on the rest of the body -- but someone else may know an even better way.

yrsdrgn
08-07-2007, 01:26 AM
um, does the underside really matter? I'm guessing for quality reasons and durability it might matter but you might be able to answer it better than I.

As for the gap, yes the stock hood does have the same gap but it's really not that noticeable because the hood is the same color as the chassis is and from that picture the gap seems to be the same distance as compared to the stock hood's gap.

yrsdrgn
08-07-2007, 01:26 AM
um, may i ask who makes these cf hoods for you?

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 01:36 AM
We have them made locally (so we can go pick them up in person). The maker prefers that resellers brand them under our own business name (G2 Autosports in our case).

You'll find the same hood at www.deftracing.com for $395 PLUS $165 shipping (yes, that's right Vanderkitten LOL). And, he claims to make them "in house" -- not.

I would like to ask 3 questions (coming straight from the SEIBON FAQ (http://www.seiboncarbon.com/faq.asp)):

Is the product made with one-piece carbon sheet, or multiple sheets put together?
Does it have a gel-coat finish or clear coat finish?
Is the carbon sheet wrapped around the skeleton, or is it integrated into the mold?TIA :respekt:

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 02:15 AM
1. one piece sheet
2. gel coat (four applications). I've had a hood from these guys on my tC for about a year and it still looks great.
3. I'm not sure, but I know they do hand lay the CF instead of vacuum forming it. (I think vacuum forming is better, honestly, but the CF does look great). Hope that helps.

I think Seibon is a superior product - if you want to pay for it.

yrsdrgn
08-07-2007, 02:19 AM
what happens when the gel coat starts to fade and decreases in shininess? do you just wax it to help it regain it's shine?

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 02:21 AM
well, mine hasn't faded in a year. I keep it well waxed though.

When it does fade, I'll probably go ask a body shop to re-shoot it with some clear coat -- I can't see that would be very expensive.

08-07-2007, 02:39 AM
so how long will it take after we have 8 buyers?

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 02:45 AM
They only have one mold for the Yaris hood - said they could make our order within two weeks. Plus transit time. I already have boxes and bubble wrap; (my small business ships 30+ orders a day).

They've made quite a few hoods for me (meaning 10+ in four months or so) and so far, they've been really good about production time.

yrsdrgn
08-07-2007, 02:47 AM
well in that case we need 5 more people!!!!! HURRY UP so we can get our new hoodies =P ok that was corny

yrsdrgn
08-07-2007, 12:30 PM
um, is there a warranty with this hood?

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 03:17 PM
Don't know about a warranty, but if it splits apart or fails in some way within a year, I'll take care of it. Remember, I put one of these on my car too.

Here is some shipping information. Boxes this size are expensive!
These are SAMPLE destinations only, so you can get an idea of your shipping cost.

What I'm not charging for:
picking up the hoods
bubble wrap
tape
time to package these really well and print labels.
60" x 36" x 8" box = $18.00

UPS Ground shipping:

to Nor. CA: $75 + box = $93.
to TX = $84 + box = $102.
to NY = $93 + box = $111.

08-07-2007, 05:40 PM
how long do you think the clear coat will stay glossy and smooth? No-name hoods, which this one seems like it is, like to turn yellow in about one summer.

does it use the stock latch?

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 05:55 PM
stock latch yes. I have the same hood on my tC, about a year now, and it has not "aged" and still looks real nice enough to take to a lot of car shows.

cali yaris
08-07-2007, 06:05 PM
tacsniper: $123 + box = $141 to your location via UPS Ground.

cali yaris... maybe you should confirm this by pouring water into the crack and see if you spot any water on the pavement under the front of your yaris.

DMart
08-11-2007, 01:44 PM
i dont think there's that much of a difference, the reason it looks that way i think is because of the contrast (black/white) and even with a slightly larger gap, its a gap either way, wouldnt water get in there with the oem hood??? here's a pic of the gap for oem hood, i cant tell the difference if there's any...

cali yaris
08-12-2007, 12:41 AM
I washed my car today. The engine and engine compartment were dry afterward.

I took the picture on purpose to show a closeup of the gap. Maybe someone with another brand of CF hood could post up a similar pic. The one above looks pretty darn close to me. I really don't think leaking is an issue.

it's coated with four layers of gel coating so basically yes you can wash/wax the car after you install the hood and you're ready to go.

I forgot. For those of you considering Seibon as an alternative (probably the best CF in the industry IMO), please note that the Seibon ONLY comes ina finer 1x1 weave.

This will not match other CF parts on the car, as most CF is made in 2x2 weave. Not trying to diss Seibon here, but I found out the hard way (by buying a Seibon hatch), and the mis-match bothers me, so I thought you should know.
