Hi for those who haven't seen me on this forum!
I'm Christian from the Netherlands and i live in the beautiful medieval city Breda
But this what you guys are interested in:
I have the Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4d, 90 BHP with 190 Nm, that's 71,82 ft-lbs.
Maybe i'm going to let it chiptune but maybe i'll wait when TTE (ToyotaTeamEurope) has the original.
The turbodiesel Yaris is easy to drive, fuel economic and very quiet on the highway.
It uses 5L/ 100km, that's 47 MPG (US) with average speeds on the highway 80.8 MPH.
Now it uses 5.4L/ 100km, 43.5 MPG (US) but that's with my heavy foot  and sometimes speeds up to 99 MPH always with airco on.
You have to remember that in the Netherlands there's always heavy traffic, no empty highways.
In Europe we only have the 1.0, 1.3 and 1.8 vvti engines and off course this 1.4 D-4d.
My former car, wich my boyfriend is driving with is the former Yaris with a 1.3 vvti engine. Because of the lesser weight it's pretty fast too.
But i've heard that the diesel Yaris can not be bought in the States.
Is there anyone one out here from anywhere in the world who also has the Yaris D-4d??
I just want to talk about how you experience the diesel Yaris, or if you have any question about it feel free to do that!
Here's my new Yaris, so i can prove that this the diesel

And what do you think about the Toyota Avensis from boyfriends father?

From this Avensis there's a version here in Europe that's called D-4d D-cat.
It's a super clean 2.2 turbodiesel engine with 177 BHP and an impressive 400 Nm, 295 lb-ft! It's the most powerful 4 cylinder diesel engine!
Sweet.. A diesel powered Yaris... Who knew?
Nice diesel! Good mpg numbers!

I'm green with envy! The diesel has tons of torque too.

Thanks you guys.
The gas prizes are rising in the USA (Canada too?), do you see more diesels then?
It's sweet to have much torque with such a light little car. It feels like you have a much bigger engine and car. And it's nice that the car is small because there's not much space here in Holland

The 2008 VW Jetta TDI is coming back...

Diesel never really took off in the States like it should have IMO. Your car is gorgeous!

In Italy there are a lot of diesel powered Yaris.
I don't like diesel.
The Avensis is a very big car but I think that Japaneses have more success with small cars.
Do you remember the Carina E?

We Yanks tend to gravitate towards the hybrid cars. The Prius is so popular here. It suffers the same thing the diesels do, price vs. savings. If you sit down and crunch the numbers the extra cash you put out for a Prius is more than you'd save on gas. The extra money you normally spend on a diesel is the same way but at least with a diesel the engine should last forever and can take the miles.

Diesels kick ass, I'd love it if I could have gotten my 3 door as a diesel. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smilies/expressive/drool.gif

I'll have to double check, but I'm quite sure the diesel versions of many cars, at least in Europe, are cheaper than the equivalent petrol versions...

In Italy a diesel Yaris is more expensive than a petrol one.
The 1.0 petrol basic version costs €11.000
The 1.4 Diesel basic version costs € 13.000
and here petrol and diesel have almost the same price:
petrol € 1,30/litre
diesel € 1,19/litre
so if you buy a diesel car you cannot save money...!
But Italians love diesel....I don't know why!!!
maybe for diesel engine longer life!

yes, but I mean, the 1.4 D4-D is closer in performance to the 1.3 petrol yaris, what is the price of that one?

@ Sabina74
I don't recall your opinion about Japanese manufacturers can't build good big cars!
My boyfriends father has the Avensis and it's good value for money, one of the best in it's class!
Diesel powered cars in the Netherlands are much more expensive then the petrol ones!
Our goverment has an anti- diesel policy too.
The taxes are much higher, but the gas prizes are much higher then the diesel prizes.
Toyota Yaris 1.3 16v vvti Linea Terra 14.400€ - 304 € for 1 year
Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D Linea Terra 18.550€ - 684 € for 1 year!!!
But then the gas/diesel costs:
petrol: 1.45 €/ L ---> 7,80 USD/ Gallon
diesel: 1.09 €/ L ---> 5,64 USD/ Gallon
I have to say that i've driven the 1.3 vvti from my boyfriends brother and the diesel is much more powerful. More relax to drive because of the higher torque.
And a way better fuel economy and quieter on the highway.

Thanks for the credits
Here's a bad quality video made with my phone; i was accelerating normal in 5th gear from 119km/h to 147 km/h (74 mph to 91 mph):

I live in NY and we are not able to register a new diesel car in this wonderful state. I believe that they must have 5,000 miles on them to register here, but I'm not totally sure. I know a guy that would jump all over a diesel car because he has a diesel bus that he converted to run on used cooking oil. I guess he could purchase a used one from out of state, but he doesn't seem to want to, or maybe just cannot find much. Anyhow, I cannot imagine how efficient it would be if he had a smaller vehicle.
Thanks for the credits

Nice pics. Judging from your video, 5th gear acceleration seems faster then my gas powered 1.5L. I'd need to be in third gear to let loose the horses to defeat the diesel's torque.
Personally, I don't know if I'd give-up the quickness of the 1.5L for the durability inherent in a diesel engine. I suppose the initial clutch take-up and the ability to loaf around at a very low rpm could sway the balance. It's too bad we don't have that engine here in North America.

@ REM
That's a strange policy in your state.
Older diesel cars put out more soot (i don't know if that's the correct name for it) than younger ones.
In Europe it's forbidden in about 1/2 years to drive a car without a sootfilter.
Our goverment gives us subsidy for placing a sootfilter, so it's free.
In a lot of cities, trucks without this sootfilters are forbidden to enter the citycentre!
@ Pars
I didn't expect that the diesel is faster then the 1.5l Yaris. I think if you go from 0-60mph the gas powered one is faster!
But because of the torque what you get in the diesel it doesn't matter in wich gear you drive.
