View Full Version : Sedan better gas mileage than LB? 5 month gas chart included

After doing a cursory look at the gas mileage thread, it seems to me that the Sedan gets better gas mileage than the Lift back. All the Lift Back numbers look a lot like the numbers you get with a Scion xA – high 30s. I think all these cars share the same motor. I think the Sedan is simply more aerodynamic.
Anyway, here are 5 months of Gas Mileage numbers – yours may vary.
Methodology: a simple reading of the gas pump compared to odometer at fill up -- mostly highway miles

I really don't think bailout drives a sedan!!!!!

it's pretty hard to tell since everyone has different driving styles and driving conditions. but i experience mpg in the 40's as well.

Ive hit 40+ in my liftback, tho like Kaotic said, it all depends on the person, and the driving conditions(city/highway, flat land/hills Mountains.

I average between 40-42 in my LB.

Technically, the Sedan is slightly more aerodynamic and on the books, it's lighter by some 100-200lbs? This said, it does vary with the driver.
Bailout is the exception to the rule. He takes every single technique known to hypermilers and applies them. And there is a couple other LBs who I know break 49mpgs.
Now, I know for certain it's all style of driving. I break 47 mpg constantly and the most I've done is drive 55mph. So it can be done in either car. When it comes to hypermiling though, the LB's have some advantage I don't know off. When I tried my hardest, I barely broke 50 last summer. There was a LB drive here who wasn't bail out and he was doing 50 plus consistently for almost 2-3 months.

 That's very good gas mileage! I wish I could drive that way. Unfortunately I have a heavy foot. :frown:

i had no trouble getting 40-45 mpg on every tank (over a 1 year period) with no hypermiling techniques with my liftback. my opinion is that the real difference comes from driving the manual vs the automatic.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/calculatorSelectEngine.jsp?year=2007&make=Toyota&model=Yaris
38.9 mpg average (based on 43 vehicles) vs 34.9 mpg average (based on 67 vehicles). that is quite a real world difference and it is a fair sized sample. my guess is most people posting there are of a similar demographic (i.e. are somewhat conscientious about their driving styles).
for what its worth, the liftback and sedan have the same coefficient of drag (.29)
...and the s model sedan (or hb) adds weight and aerodynamic drag

I have a LB with the 5speed. My best was 47.9, my worst was 39.2. I'm pretty sure driving styles and conditions are more of a factor. I find that I get the best mileage on rural roads at 35-40 mph. My highway mileage is a little worse.

i can barely get 40MPG with mine. I have a sedan. I was able to get a LITTLE better mileage with my echo, but it's weight relative. The echo weight 954kg, while my yaris weights something like 1080kg.
the LB is heavier because of the extra reinforcements due to the lack of a trunk.

i dont think there is a 200 lb difference.
from the toyota website:
2009 5 dr LB curb weight: 2340 lbs
2009 sedan auto curb weight: 2326 lbs
im no genius, but that is only 14 lbs.

okay...probably a dumb question over here...but what is hypermiling?

I can't understand how the sedan is lighter. It's like 1.5 feet or so longer with most everything else being the same. Weird.

It is attempting to get better gas mileage. There are dozens of ways to do it, but the best is to slow down.

Automatic 5-door LB here. Normally getting around 55mpg. I use many hypermiling techniques. Learned to use them last summer when gas prices went crazy and been using them since.

i can barely do 39mpg average 60/40... are you guys driving 4d engine 1.3 or 1.0 liter..most i got was 46mpg but thats 95% hwy going avg of 55 mph all the way.

Do you use any hypermiling techniques when driving?
http://gogreentravelgreen.com/green-transportation/the-extreme-hypermiling-guide-450-tips-to-increase-your-miles-per-gallon-and-save-gas/
The ones that have helped the most are coasting and driving at around 55mph on the highway (speed limit or under on surface streets).

i do about 80 % of the hypermill concept.. just chose not to turn off my engine on the stop lights..

Stopping engine isn't that big an advantage. You should be getting 45 with 80 percent of the techniques.

33 Overall for the sedan (page 11) and 30 for the liftback (page 26). For what it is worth.
They really seem to hate the Yaris, but the Scion's are rated right up there and the Echo makes numerous rankings for the most reliable used car.
