What is a low/normal/high value for rim/wheel weights?

I was thinking of getting some 17's, but the total weight is about 40lbs with rims and wheels. the rims are around 20lbs. is that horrible?

I have the stock 15" steelies now, anyone know how heavy they are alone/with tires?

heh, ya.
stock is 33, koyos are 40, so its like 20% heavier. probably wont be too noticeable, you think?

You probably won't notice it... But your Engine will!

Nutzoid: This is from your Victory Library reference: "Lighter wheels & tires do have a very small additional benefit due to the lower amount of power required to rotate them..."

The key words here are "VERY SMALL additional benefit".

The average driver will never notice any of the "very small additional benefit" of lower weight wheels... nor will the Yaris engine under normal driving conditions.

well remember we are talking about a pretty weedy 1.5L, 106hp motor here, not a monster V8, any weight reduction in the drivetrain for us can make a noticeable improvement

I took the back seat, Spare, and Jack out of my car... and added 4 extra Miles Per Gal!

That's less then 100lbs

If you add 40-50lbs on the car... I could only guess you would subtract 2 Miles Per Gal

The car's weight plays a big factor in it's performance... Go on a diet and see just how much it can change!

Just to drive the point home!

2007 Hummer H2 Curb weight: 6400lb 50lbs .78%
2007 Nissan Maxima Curb weight: 3591 lb 50lbs 1.3%
2007 Ford Mustang Curb weight: 3575 lb 50lbs 1.3%
2007 Toyota Yaris Curb weight: 2290 lb 50lbs 2.2%

Where does 50lbs make the biggest difference?

well unless your really going full out meaning complete gutting the car to nothing but the driver seat steering wheel and shifter then even 25 lbs will make a difference, you can even say you might need to diet.......

but for daily driving an extra 100 Lbs is like having a really skinny date everywhere you go ... lol

haha had to start another thread. but i didnt really notice a huge mpg change, city i noticed 1 mpg loss and on the highway didnt really notice anything....once your going, your going...

but its true, if you want lightweight rims, you need to stick to 16 inch and lower... when your going above a 16 inch rim, especially on a compact car, your not going for complete performance, your going for looks.

It just depends on what you are looking for.

.........and the weight of the rims is not sprung like the rest of the car

correct brickhard.... unsprung weight is the worst.....

but your not going crazy huge and crazy heavy.... so worrying about ruining anything is a little overboard, if you were runnin some chrome 20's and punchin it everywhere........your askin for trouble....

thats why all the big suvs eventually will have problems.... throwin them big 24's on, and hammering on it whenever they get a chance really puts a toll on the tranny and everything....

like i said earlier, if weight is a concern to you, and a huge deal in ur decision these arent the rims for you....if money is no option you can find a set of 17s that are lightweight. but your best bet if you still want a decent size rim is 16.... can save on the weight of the rim and possibly the tire.....

these are about normal for the size and all....and chrome rims and some others will be slightly heavier....

found a very interesting article about wheel weight and size and how it directly affects WHP:

Bigger Rims = Less Power to the Ground (http://books.google.com/books?id=Y7P6BFss_0cC&pg=PA24&lpg=PA24&dq=14+steel+wheels+weight&source=web&ots=vz7VP0bLsZ&sig=MKvrwH5B6su1FgryYfLzKBBSNeo#PPA24,M1)

In this article it is presented that a gain of 8lbs per wheel and 3" to wheel diameter caused a reduction in power of 5.4WHP (about 4.75% WHP loss in this specific case).

Now what if we keep the wheel diameter the same(15") on the Yarii but shed 7lbs per wheel? What kinds of WHP gains would be seen? 2-3% improved WHP?

So what does this mean for a Yarii owner looking at a wheel upgrade?
According to O3Z33's post (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3176&highlight=weight+wheels) the stock Yarii 15" steel wheel/tire combo weighs 33lbs each.

In the same post he has replaced those wheels with these:
RS-Watanabe Cyclone Gold 15x7 +35 (9.4lbs each)
Bridgestone RE555 front and RE540S rear 195/55/15

Weight reduction per wheel: 7lbs

It does not seem like much but if one considers either a 4.75% loss versus a possible 2-3% gain in WHP - that is a fairly noticeable gap of roughly 7-8% loss for bigger wheels.

Just food for thought.

check out this site. it has almost all the weights of the rims out there...
ideally, u want to keep ur rims just big enough to clear your brakes. Less unsprung weight, better reponse. But if u are not doing any kind of racing, you wont even notice the difference.
so, ya..... just go with whatever u think looks good.
