I'm a technician at a computer store. Mostly I repair end user pc's, but on occasion I get dragged out to do cabling (I'm by far the smallest one at my job), and sometimes I get to go help with the big server installs, depending on who's available. I used to do server side more, but me and one of the people back there (the dispatcher) don't get along very well. Usually if I go, the owner is the one doing the work. I'm lucky that I'm a relative.

If I may ask, what company do you work for and what designs are associated?
Kioshi, I am about the last one you should ask for career advice. My degree is in English with art minor! All my training has been on the job, and since I never had a career plan I've had some odd ones (for example, my first was designing exhibits at a museum where I had been volunteer classroom helper).
My only advice would be that whatever you are designing, keep the end user in mind at all times. Learn to think like they do and how people actually use stuff in the real world--this seems to apply whether you are designing an ergonomic chair or a web interface. And learn to justify your decisions to the accountants--this helps ensure your designs get produced with a minimum of aggravation for everyone.
Good luck to you! man I kinda wish I was just starting out again... :frown:

Well, Sharepoint is designed for small to medium sized businesses and actually, after giving quite a few demos, pretty much all of them like it and thinks that it could help them run their business more efficiently. It stores documents on a SQL database so it's easier to share documents and it won't be lost as easily as if was on a hard drive. Also, it has version control so it will actually keep copies of pervious versions of a document.. before it was revised and you can always revert back to previous versions. There's also task lists, etc. etc. I can keep going but let's give you an idea.. big businesses are using something similar called SAP. That costs millions upon millions of dollars. As for Sharepoint, with all the required software, it's about $10,000. Therefore, it makes more sense for smaller companies.
If you have more questions, PM me

I'm a Computer Technician. Well, in a word, anyway. Really I'm a jack of all computer trades.
We have 10 gaming computers that people pay and play on by the hour.
We have 6 internet computers that people pay (less) and surf on by the hour.
We have 5 XBox 360s that people pay and play on by the hour.
We have 26 workstations for people to bring their own equipment.
We have a custom-built DDR machine.
We do computer repairs and on-site jobs. I've done the entire computer and networking systems for a couple of local companies, and I repair an average of (approximately) 25 computers a week.
I also manage/administrate our 8 servers in addition to all of our other computers.
My boss, who is one step shy of computer illiterate (but at least she's really cool about it) opened this store about a year ago, so her husband and I have been at work on it since a year and a half ago. I work a 54 hour week and love it.
Oh, and I go to college for a major in automotive design.

I usually work with 4160vac but sometimes up to 13.8 and on rare occasions 33kV, up to 1,200 amps. Always have stayed scared of it, even two years after I started working with power systems. The Old Hands tell me when you quit being scared that trouble is just around the corner.

Since I started my own business, it's been mostly high end residential, with some commercial (stores, delis) thrown in to stay sharp. I did most of my "mechanic" work in IBM facilities in upper downstate NY (Fishkill, Poughkeepsie, Kingston). Except for switch gear and transformer work, 480V is where I topped out at. I would rather give the job to someone a lot more experienced with currents over 600V than "try" it myself.
I guess the most voltage I ever "worked" with was 41,600V. I spent 3 years working in the nuclear industry, albeit as an HP tech, so I mostly watched the big boys do their thing and keep them from glowing--Radiologically.

I work on the weekends at Little Shop of pets www.littleshopofpets.net
Durring the week I screen print and once a month I book shows for local band that i do shirts for :)
the idea is to start making enough on the screen printing to quit the pet store and then go full time screen printing and spend fri/sat/sun at concerts either hosting them or promoting the shirt business at them
I am a lost university student.

I setup high end audio video systems and do home automation.
I go in million dollar homes everyday setting up everything from a theater to a 7.2 surround sound system as well as smart lighting and hvac controls. My goal is to hide ever wire so they can't see a single cable :)
I just started this job 3 months ago, prior to it i was doing very high end A/V setups for the government and corporate world working on some major projects. But the residential business is more fun and lucrative. Its amazing at how much money some people have!!! I was in a customers house the other day. This guy was 35 yrs old with a multimillion dollar house. Where do they get their money!!!! hahaha.
Its sort of depressing because they have all the toys that i want lol. but i love my job.

Lot of guys where I work do side work in residential. They have a job to keep benefits, retirement and "steady work". I've thought of it but dont want the liability hassles. We don't have Tort Reform in PA so you have to watch your Ps and Qs or you'll be sued.

We normally don't work "hot" but sometimes we do. It's pretty scary touching conductors that are carrying 4160 and all you got between you and Eternity are leather and rubber. You can check those gloves over and over but it's still creepy thinking that all you got is a fraction of an inch of shit between you and some real pain.
Some of the guys I work with think I'm a bit touched because I insist on wearing the full monty of gear. I tell them, "NASA thought that the Space Shuttle was 'safe' because it flew fifty flights without mishap too". I guess none of them ever read Richard Feynman's "Minority Report".
In case anyone is curious I've cited Feyman's report here (http://history.nasa.gov/rogersrep/v2appf.htm) It's good reading, especially for anyone who works with technology or science or just is curious about how professionals look at such things.
I guess the most voltage I ever "worked" with was 41,600V.
More than me. Of course anything over about 220 is potentially lethal. Kind of like saying, "You can fall 100 feet or 10,000 feet, which makes you more dead?"

I work with a former Nuke tech. He's not quite right in the head. Then again, anyone who works with dangerous stuff every day isn't quite "normal".
Normal people die under such conditions. You have to be a bit anxious and uptight to cope with dangerous stuff.

Pretty room! I wonder - you have sound absorbing walls and a tile floor? Don't you want consistent textures on all six surfaces facing you?

Even twelve volt will kill you if it hits you "right". I had one mechanic when I was a noob ask me if my ass was ok, as he had burns on his and couldn't figure out why. After much razzing, we looked around and found out the duct we were sitting on during lunch the day before was live--16V. He took his boots off because his feet hurt and that grounded him.
The nuke guys are a little weird, no doubt about it. I worked with a guy named Mike Goetz who was supposedly related to Bernie Goetz, "the subway vigilante". Well Mike was gonna have a million dollars in the bank asap, so he lived in his car, ate from the garbage, and did nothing that cost money. A hell of a good tech though:wink:
