I've searched and can't find a DIY to remove the license plate lights. I took a look at mine and I'm not quite sure how to do it. I figured I should ask before breaking the panels trying to remove them. Anyone got any advice or a link to a DIY?

Are you sure you are unable to remove the license plat lights? I replaced mine w/ hyper blue L.E.D. and it was easy...

All you have to do is- first, remove the light cover: This can be done by using a flathead screwdriver w/ tape or tissue on the tip (just to make sure you don't scratch or damage the cover) and inserting the tip in the lever located on the left side and pulling it down. Next, you'll see the bulb installed inside the cover- all you need to do is to turn it counter clockwise to remove it. That's basically it... then of course replace it with the new bulb and put everything back together.

Are you referring to the license plate bulbs or lens cover?

If bulbs, check the manual. I referred to the manual when I changed my bulbs.

If lens, let's wait a while for someone to post DIY. I'm also interested...just for stock knowledge.

refer to my DIY sedan spoiler intall here. you have to open the trunk and take out that carpeting to access the bulbs. really, you just have to be able to open the top portion of the carpeting.

^ lol yea trust me ive tried I cant really get a good grip of the bulb so I tried using tweezers and just wound up breaking the bulb and removing it in pieces. But after inserting the new bulbs into the old housings I reinstalled the old housings and now tag lights and tail lights are non functional??? WHAT THE FUCK AM I DOING WRONG!!!

Did you reverse the polarity of the bulb when you inserted it? I have blue LEDs in my tag lights.

And yeah, all the lights in the Yaris are a huge PITA to remove. To get mine out I put a little strip of rubber around my pliers and used them to remove it. I managed to get all of them out without breaking them that way.

most LEDs have polarity. You'll have to reverse installation if they don't work. Otherwise, check the contacts as some china LED adapters don't make contact with the metal in the bulb socket. they tend to get displaced upon pushing them into the socket (the metal "wire" on the upper right in the pic)

Turned out to be the bulb itself. Once the bulb was removed (not too hard once you get the hang of it), and cleaned the connections and replaced it, it ceased to work all together. So, replaced left rear license plate bulb (Sylvania # 2825). $4.99 (two-pack) plus tax = $5.39.
