View Full Version : Converting Yaris from DBW to DBC?

Does anyone have a clue on how to convert the yaris from the Drive by wire system to Drive by Cable... I know I would need a new throttle body that isn't electronic and a new pedal and whatnot, but i think thats about it. Has anyone else looked more into this subject? Thanks for the input!

well mechanically that's all that would be needed, yeah, but you'll also need to look into the electronic side of things, the ECU will still be looking for the throttle position signal, and will probably go nuts when it can't get it.

The simplest solution, I guess, is to keep the original electric throttle somewhere, still connected, but just not doing anything... :iono:

Yeah, a little trickey eh.

yeah, just so the sensor is tricked that it is there, but just not active... I was trying to make a ITB kit for the car, but i keep scratching my head when all the throttle bodies are cable driven...

even the ones Danstoy uses are cable driven so there must be something different here..but I have no clue, it completely stumped me..and im not going to be an ass and ask Danstoy all his secrets hahah, I need to figure out SOME things

What i also found on a Lexus board where they were trying to convert was

Hell, if you want to get rid of DBW on the stock TB... just unplug the throttle control motor, open up your accelerator pedal position sensor assembly, rotate a few degrees to give the cable connection full control over the butterfly, and call it a day.

but this conflicts with it

I did this with my altezza's TB but what i found was that since my throttle lever and TPS are one unit i had to rotate the TPS sensor as well. With the TPS rotated the bolt holes didnt line up again so that was problem # 1. Problem #2 was that the throttle cable was too long when i did this. With the Altezza the DBW controls idle and is active throughout the complete throttle range. The manual cable only turns the butterfly at about 60% throttle and opens it till about 75% throttle.

Well you could do something real clever and use the DBW's motor to turn a lever that pulls on the ITB throttle cable, that could do the job too without having to change pedals or anything. Of course, you'd still have the characteristics/disadvantages of a DBW throttle.

Yeah, that is true, i don't really care for the Yarii system of DBW its like eh... too jumpy for me, but its my girls car... but hmm...maybe cap off the cable lever on the ITBs and link the wires up ? might work a little more fab than i expected but thats ok..

Wait for reflashing ability. Converting it to cable is not worth the hassle.

The DBW gain and pedal travel to TB blade travel are fully adjustable.

I can flash the ECU, how is that going to help me lol...aghhhh im stuckkk

Could someone explain the difference to me between DBW and DBC? Thanks!

drive by wire is electronic while drive by cable is cable driven... look at an older car, you can grab the cable and tug on it and it will rev the engine...

try to PM Teruyume, he did an xB retro fit of a supercharger... pretty sure he swapped his car over to DBC to accomidate the xB throttlebody... just a though

You can adjust the DBW response in the factory ECU

how? i just got my car the other day and it shits me how the first 5mm on the pedal doesnt actually do anything.but i guess ill just get used to it

you need to be able to reflash the ECU, and thanks for the idea, I just didn't think the TPS on the pedal kicked in in those first 5mm, but if its adjustable from the ecu that would be alot easier, and I figured out a way to wire another throttle body and tap into the existing tps and just trick the ecu...

it just looks like it would be a few resistors in there... like they just upped the gain is all, I'll take a look around see if i can find a DIY, do it and post up pics....

YUP! well, I'll be buying another pedal assembly to try this out on unless anyone can confirm otherwise, because i am pretty sure this will work on any other dbw models because it is the same standard...

If anyone is in the process of being down there or taking theirs apart would be cool to check this out... ill actually make another post when im done doing this mod as well...

Wow good find there, I don't know how similar our pedal assembly is, but it should be similar...

i thought it should be similar but sadly its a thing of magnetics and electronics -_-

i think it's really simple... there ARE quite a few oem ECU made for the 1nz-fe with a wired throttle body.

Nexus1155

didn't know that many cars came with the 1nz-fe, but i confirmed that the echo throttle body and assmebly will work....but what about the ecu?

edit: damn

Applications:

Toyota Yaris/Echo
Scion xA/ist
Scion xB
Toyota Vios
Toyota Raum
Toyota Porte
Toyota Platz
Toyota Auris
Toyota Fun Cargo
Toyota Premio
Toyota Allion
Toyota Sienta
Toyota WiLL
Toyota Probox
Toyota Ractis
Toyota Corolla Axio
Toyota Corolla Fielder

i'm taking a guess you can use the ecu from a scion xA??
BUT.. i'm pretty sure you will have to redo the whole wiring harness anyways...

Nexus1155

I don't think so... I think they use different coding as like ones 32 bit and one isnt in some maps... but I'll have to check it out... see if they have one at a junkyard... I'm aiming to find an Echo and grab the pedal assmebly and throttle body with cable from there. that would probably be the easiest car to find there...

edit*

Different intake setup, different exhaust and routing...
Different ECU 32 bit vs Scion's 64 bit...
Different transmission C50 vs Scion's C150...
