Or just use the ATTACHMENT button on the Reply To, or New Thread screen. You can go back and EDIT your post, to include the pic's, rather then make another post or reply. This is helpful to keep the pic's with your ORIGINAL post!

Look below, to see what it looks like on the screen.

So ive been trying to do the same thing - as Ive posted but havent had any luck getting the headlights out. Did you have to pull off the front bumper? If you could post a quick how-to of just getting them that would be great.

1>Start by removing the front bumper clips across the top above the radiator
2>remove the clips in the fender well towards the front bumper.
3>Now gently pry the the front bumper near da fender until it pops and reveals the screw for the headlight.
4>Now remove the top screw holding the headlight on, theres one more screw behind the bumper by the radiator.
5>Now remove the headlight.
6>Now take the headlight and either put in the oven for about 10 mins @350 degress or heat with a blow dryer and slowly pry apart. once aprt move too next step
7>on the back on the housing the 2 aiming notches can be twisted and popped out
8> the 2 chrome ieces in the housing now can be popped out, this is where u do all of the masking off the section u want to remain chrome( mainly the reflector for the turn signals and headlight reflector.
9>This part should be done while your first coat is drying. With the glass part of the housing u can remove the amber reflector for painting or complete removal whatever ur preference, by GENTLY prying the clear part out which can also be painted or removed.
10>Painting: I cleaned the reflector with alcohol first, grabbed a can of dupont flat black paint and layed down about 5 coats(each one light with about 3 mins between each coat.I used the time between coats to seperate the other light for prepartion.
11>After all painting is done and masking tape removed be sure to wipe down the inside of the lense and reflector housing to remove finger prints and paint residue.
12>Put everything back together.
13>Wrap headlights with tape to provide clamping force and reheat to let the glue get soft again, now reapply pressure and let glue cool.
14>The fun part BEER, WATER u choice put headlights back in car, refix the bumper, install all clips. Enjoy u new JDM Jbann blacked out headlights.
Hope this helps if n e ? feel free to hit me up, i'll be on regularly now, also i take back my 1st offer i will do headlights for $25 a pair or if ur in the area i'll give u a hand for free. HEY we should setup up a meet before it starts getting cold. GOOD LUCK

from what i gather, you do not need to remove the bumper...havnet removed my lights yet, but looks like you only need to take off the sides, and move a bit to gain access to the final screws to the headlights

Hmm ill provide pics on what im sayin. I think you do need to take off the bumper cuz the front light screws is right behind the bumper.

Ok here are some pics of the bolts, or stumps whatever u wanna call it.

Ι think yes.

What temperature should we use?For how long?

costaricandreams
08-16-2006, 08:15 AM
425 degrees for ~20-25 min. Oh wait, no. That is how long it takes to cook a rising crust pizza. It almost sounds like a cruel joke to talk someone into baking headlights in an oven. Or should the oven be set on broil? I'm sure it works, but it sounds funny. Please let us know if anyone has problems or comes out with some melted headlights. If not, I'll toss mine in the oven along with everyone else.

Not to say I know much but about the paint question, I'm guessing you use a high heat resistant paint?? I really want to smoke my headlights as well, but I don't have the patients and knowledge to do it myself, I'm too scared to screw up something.

Dude, you really need to start READING peoples reply's... It's all well and good asking lots of questions all the time, nothing wrong with that... but most of the answer's are found in the same posts your asking them!

i like to let the oven preheat, and then turn the oven off, and then put the entire light housing in the oven throw it on a piece of cardboard (so you dont risk the chance of getting the grill makes like you would on a hotdog :)

by headlight housing, i mean remove the bulb, wires, any rubber parts, and anything else that you can remove :)

it may not be "easily" removed, but just apply some preasure to it, and you shouldnt have any "problems" seperating :)

TUTORIAL WITH PICS CUMMIN SOON IN 2 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hasher22
08-19-2006, 02:37 AM
TUTORIAL

Items i used
- Phillips screw driver (the + head one)
- Black "Power Plus Spray Brush" Spray Paint 150g
(you might want to get a bigger size if your are painting the majority of the headlights)
- Maskin tape

1- Start by opening your hood (DUH)
2- You will see these little black pivet thingy's....you need to take all of them out. To get them out push the little circle in the middle of the black things and push them up. to get them back in again do the opposite.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/4325/p7190715es5.jpg

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/5933/p7190716ob5.jpg

3- There will be some on the side of the bumper next to the wheels so u can get them out too.
4-Next thing up - look under the car, there will be screws there. Take them out with a PHILLIPS screwdriver.
5 - Now your ready to take off the bumper. (As for me i didnt take it off, i just pulled it off half way, while half of it was still attached to the car) To take off the bumper you need to put a bit of pulling force. 1st of all PULL each side of the bumper with a bit of force (dont worry i wont snap or bend the bumper)
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/3116/p7190718iw0.jpg
6- now its time to remove the lights.........first of all there are 3 screws that are holding the lights in place. Get them out!!!

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/6128/p7190719vt4.jpg

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/4531/p7190720hq8.jpg

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/1655/p7190721po2.jpg

7-Now take off the head lights and of course the wires are connected to it.

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/9860/p7190723td2.jpg

8-Now thats done, do it to the other one!!! when both headlights are off, shut the hood, lock up ur car and get those things into your OVEN!...lol

(SORRY NO PICS FOR THIS SECTION!!)
9-Ok put your headlights into the oven and set it to 250 - 300 Degrees (I put mine on 250. 250 is enough). Leave it in there for about 5 mins!! DONT LEAVE IT FOR 5 MINS STRAIGHT!!! KEEP CHECKING IT SO IT DOESNT MELT!!
10- The gooey REALLY STICKY glue should all be LOOSENED up, so take it out of the oven and GET A BUTTER KNIFE and try to seperate it with the butter knife!!! (if your doin it with ur hands it will be harder, i suggest get a butter knife and stick it between the black and the clear plastic and bend the knife upwards so it will pop out!!)
11 - once its sperated it will look like this (thats just the gooey glue)

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/3304/p7190729ik8.jpg

12- Now get the parts you wanna SPRAY paint. go outside and spray IT! if you are paintin it black, have about 3-5 coats on. AND REMEMBER NOT TO SPRAY TOO CLOSE, becuz there will be dry drip marks on it. you dont want that. it doesnt matter if there are unfinished patches in your 1st - 2nd coat. the 3rd - 5th coat will cover it all up! and it will look great! With every coat leave it in the sun to dry for about 10 mins then go to ur 2nd coat and so on.

Oh yea you might wanna cover the spaces u dont want to spray black, red, blue whatever colour with good masking tape.

12 - once everything is painted and your happy PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER :)

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/1593/p7190730we4.jpg
(ive just painted the top bit....thats all i wanted done...)

13- now go back to ur car, put in the headlights, attach the bumper, and put in the little black plastic thingys and the screws back in.

THERE U GO!! WALLA!! you now have sexy black head lights....

Oh I have a question.

How did you put back the glue?

hasher22
08-19-2006, 08:00 PM
Just put the glue back in its place, around the headlights. If there is glue on the headlight cover, take it off and shove it into the black part. If that made any sense.

ChinoCharles
08-19-2006, 09:38 PM
So this has nothing to do with smoking the headlights, right? This is just basically painting a bezel similar to the chrome headlight covers sold on ebay?

hasher22
08-19-2006, 10:04 PM
umm yer just painting the inside of the headlights a different colour.

Though its been called "smokin" but then again smokin can mean "tinting" the headlights.

the glue will only soften so its easier to pull apart. Once u painted everything u want to paint. Then you easily put it back together with the same glue. The glue is "reuseable"......

If you have HID's do you still need the reflective walls? I thought I saw the same thing done on that TC someone posted from scionlife with the TSX conversion... I think he painted the reflective surfaces silver and it looked awesome. Enlighten me here.

Chris07LB

With PROJECTORS, they are doing all the work/aiming the light pattern. So yes, its fine to paint/smoke everything else inside the headlight assy.

Our headlights are designed to reflect the light off the inner side walls (sides closest to the center of car), after the deflector "deflects," the light.. as to not create a center "hot spot" in the headlight assy.

There was more I read about this in my shop book on the headlight topic.

It took me 45 minutes just to get the two headlights looking the same, but as they say... measure twice, paint once.

Should look good!

I would REALLY like to paint my headlights... But I am worried about the Re-sealing Process... Lord knows if I fuck it up... I will get condensation and water in my headlights... That would kill me... I would feel like I killed my baby!

If one of you more veteran headlight painter guys would be willing to supervise the process for me... I would feel more comfortable...

Hey East Coast guys… Yaris meet-up/Mod event? We can pick a hotel that we can all get to...get a couple of rooms and spend the weekend hanging out and working on our cars? If I drive for 2-3 hours I don't want to turn around same day and drive another 2-3 hours home... It would be more like a Yaris Conference!

Between the driveway, and garage, we could fit a dealers worth of Yaris here, lol.

Its definitely overdue.

Nutz, Joe could help you out... I am working on a way to do it right now without opening your headlights, too. Either way, one of us could help.

EDIT: Party at Chris's house.

Hey, here is a question for you spray tint guys. How are you buffing this to a gloss? Just some elbow grease and a shop rag or what?

Chris07LB
03-15-2007, 12:40 PM
Once its the darkness I like, I would take 2500-3000grit and wet sand with dish soap every so lightly. This will removed any little dust or airborn dirt that settled as the piece was drying.

Then a few coats of clear to give it that gloss look (or matt look, depending on the clear you want/choose), all while protecting them from the sun.

Over time, the tint will start to fade, turn greyish, if not protected with a clear over the top... ask me why I know this.

After your few coats of clear have sat for a few days, give it some good lay up time, you can then repeat the 3000grit step, and buff until your hearts content!

Dude, I'm sorry about the spray tint... you have to have your "customer ID number" to order online, and I couldn't find mine anywhere. Good news is half the can is still left, so I'll give the rest to you Sunday.

jdubau55, it is on the exterior. It is the famed "Niteshades" spray tint that is a staple in the ricer's pantry. I am just partial to the smoked look and after going the vinyl route and seeing the nice results some of our members had with the spray, I figured what the hell. I spent a good hour taping outlines and getting them perfect. My Yaris doesn't have a lazy eye or anything. If you're going to do this, get it right the first time... tape everything, avoid overspray, do it in a warm, dry place free of dust and dirt, and let them dry before installing on the car.

Chris, thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to buff them out and clear them tomorrow.

No problem about the can, I can't get over how close our light look though. You smoke your tails yet? I think this time around I am going to tape off the reverse lamp only, so I can some what see backing out my driveway, or I could smoke the whole thing and install fog lamp bulbs for the reverse lamps.... Hmm... just a thought I am sure we will do plenty of tinkerin on Sunday, who knows what will happen when you get two bored Ohio boys together who want to mod there cars :drinking:

ChinoCharles

You NEVER know. We could leave with Yarraris... right Nimble?

I smoked everything dude. Tails are smoked with the reverse light left alone just like before. Side markers are done, and the eyebrows are done. It looks fucking killer. Actually, I am considering not even buffing them. The environment I painted in was so clean that there are no spots, hairs or dust anywhere. Just looks like a kind of frosted smoked plastic. I am a lifelong Niteshades believer from here on in. I'd smoke my minivan's tail lights.

Anyone got any leaks in the headlights for moisture to get in? I know when people use to do this to their honda headlights some people messed up and didn't reseal the headlights to good and moisture got in when it rained.

I haven't gotten any leaks or moisture for my head lights. I've did them... Um... I dun know sometime in Feb or March??? I forget but it was one of the first mods I did right before I lowered my car. It's been a good 3-4 months now, just got to be sure you sealed the plastic tightly. Use a clamp or fan/hand combo (I remember it was a cold day *brrrr*)

I know this is old, but why couldn't you just tint the inside of the clear plastic part and be done with it. Then you wouldn't need clearcoat, sanding and whatnot...

I would rather spend the time to sand and seal some spray tint than have to worry about resealing headlights. The risk of water entering the housing wasn't worth it to me, at least not without a projector retrofit happening.
