this little thing cost me a new tyre

New tyre required because of this 1/2 inch screw stuck on the sidewall of my tyre of all the places!
(could have had it repaired but thought it was too dangerous - had a blow out at high speed once before)
- only noticed it while I was checking the wheels.
tried to take it out and it started hissing so I quickly screwed it back in.
Had only done less than 3k miles on it.

It doesn't appear to be in the sidewall... more in the tread. I think you would have been quite safe repairing it. I probably would have.

Samething happened to me two weeks after buying my car in about the same place. I repaired it (about 3 months ago) and had had no problems since.

ouch! sometimes the place you bought the tire from may replace it for free or cheaper than usual.

IMO purchasing a road hazard warranty is worth it--I have had 3 tires replaced at no charge.

actually there are only tires here in the US, they are tyres just about every else in the world.... just like miles and kilometers.....

but that screw is in the shoulder if the tire, it is in neither the sidewall nor the tread.... that tire was repairable, the place was just trying to sell you a tire, and they suceeded.... I know that game, I was sales/managment at a tire store for many of years

Yuck! When I had my Jetta before I got my Yaris i had it for like 3 years and i probably got a total of like 10 nails in my tires!!!!:mad:
So far i've gotten one in the Yaris, i'm so nail prone...:confused:

Some manuals that come with the tires list general guidelines about what kinds of damage can be repaired and what cannot. In many a case, a punch by a screw/nail on the treads (not the sidewall) is reparable if the screw/nail has not broken more than one steel/nylon line under the rubber. In most cases, the shop which has sold the tire can give good advice. In some circumstances, a tire shop may even perform a free repair on a tire bought from it.

most places here won't repair it because it is too near the side wall (actually on the shoulder - unpredictable stress and movement) I did a bit of reading up on this before deciding to replace it.


It's interesting to know the different safety standards that exists in different parts of the world. You must have really nice roads in N America!

I have kept the original tyre to have it repaired at a later date - I just need to find a spare steelie somewhere for it to keep as spare. I have these nasty little space saver wheel in the back, I just need to figure a way to carry a full size wheel as it wont fit in the well. The rear seats had to be put forward just to put the original tyre in the back!

you can safely repair shoulder punctures so long as they are smaller than an 1/8 of an inch and they have not cut any cords in the sidewall. you do have to use a uniseal (patch/plug in one unit) type repair and have someone who knows what they are doing the repair and it will have no problems

I've gone to the track with patched tyre that once had a nail in almost the same exact spot, so they should be okay.

I have a bad habit of going up against a freshly plowed snowbank and tend to end-up picking up a nail in the process (beware of curb and freshly plowed snow). Anyways, I got these 7 year old snow tires in the garage that are waiting for snow, they've got at least 1 or 2 patches each and still holding their air even after sitting dormant for entire season.

Useful info thanks Black Yaris - I will take that onboard.

I've had shoulder repairs in my old car before but the repairer swapped it for the spare (he didn't try to sell me a new one so he seemed honest) with the reasons I have stated - so i guess it depends on finding someone who know what they are doing which seems to be impossible in the UK without being ripped off at the same time.

Main thing is - I needed to use the car for my vacation and couldn't really use the space saver if I had any disputes - after that tyre has come off - he'll prob pull out that screw telling me is unrepairable then I'll really be screwed! Unlucky timing....
