Is it bad to switch from regular oil to synthetic and back again?

If this is a repost sorry, I'm too lazy to do search right now.

I cannot speak for every brand out there, but I can speak for VALVOLINE since I work for them. Our formulations are all compatible with one another. You could switch back and forth between conventional, synthetic blend or the full synthetic as much as you wanted to with no ill results. I cannot tell you if that is the same with all motor oils though. Hope that helps.

I work in a car-parts store myself and people who tell you that you can't change from fully to half synthetic or even mineral oil live in the past.
For years this had negative effects on the lubrication in the engine.
It came all down to additives wich weren't compatible to one-another.
In recent years everything has changed and nowadays you can put in whatever oil you want, or even mix different ones, although i think you shouldn't mix more than two oils.
Keep in mind to follow the constructors advice on the viscosity !
Otherwise you will reduce engine life rapidly !

Thanks for the advice everyone. I did my last oil change myself (synthetic) but decided to go to the dealer and have them do it this time (regular). I think from now on I will just take it there. It doesn't cost much more, and I don t have to deal with it!

You can switch all you want without problems.

That is Bull shit.... you can go back and forth from full synthetic (most synthitic are made from mineral oils), to mineral oils, to blends... to any combonation between... anyone saying otherwise is yankin your chain

I can tell you its a bad idea in a car with an older engine designed to consume oil (take... a rotary (Wankel) engined RX7). In any other car there shouldn't be a problem.

better to change your oil at a dealer or shop anyway, unless you have a way of safely and ethically disposing of the oil.
