Toyoda Automatic Loom Works created a new division devoted to the production of automobiles under the direction of the founder's son, Kiichiro Toyoda. Kiichiro Toyoda had traveled to Europe and the United States in 1929 to investigate automobile production and had begun researching gasoline-powered engines in 1930.[15] Toyoda Automatic Loom Works was encouraged to develop automobile production by the Japanese government, which needed domestic vehicle production partly due to the worldwide money shortage and partly due to the war with China.[16] In 1934, the division produced its first Type A Engine, which was used in the first Model A1 passenger car in May 1935 and the G1 truck in August 1935. Production of the Model AA passenger car started in 1936. Early vehicles bear a striking resemblance to the Dodge Power Wagon and Chevrolet, with some parts actually interchanging with their American originals.[16]

The Toyota Vitz (sold in different markets as the Toyota Yaris and Toyota Echo) is a line of subcompact cars first launched by Toyota in 1999, designed by Sotiris Kovos. The Vitz is a 3 and 5 door hatchback automobile.

Since the hatch and sedan are two completely different vehicles, perhaps it would be good to identify which car you are referring to. It's also interesting to see how the cars compare and contrast.

If you have power windows, you can roll them up or down AFTER you've turned the car off.
You can start the car by just moving the key to the starter position and releasing it before the engine actually starts running. No need to hold the key in the starter until the engine starts anymore.

Ahhh, I remember one now. If you put the rear seats alllllll the way foward in the liftback, and fold them down, they will go COMPLETELY flat. Then you do that flippy thing on the rear flooring and you have a totally flat surface to load things.
Yay me!

Ooooo my favorite one! The rear wiper DIY! I hope that was pre-hack... (maybe the new hip term to use around here?)
You simply pop the shroud off the rear wiper at the base, cut the little nub of plastic off, and put it back on. Voila! Now your rear wiper can be pulled all the way back and stay back for easy cleaning.

Also, my friend told me this one. When you fold the seats down flat, make sure you put a towel or something down. I guess the fabric on the rear of the fold down seats is sort of fragile.

I don't fully understand how the flaps on the trunk cover of the LB flip out to cover the gap, can someone explain it to me please? When I flip them out, they are not completely flat and flush with the seat, they kind of rest angled up a bit.

Push the rear seats as far foward as they will go then fold them down. Flip over the cover and it should be flat.

If you remove your lower glovebox (just pop it out too), you can check and see if your car has an A/C filter installed. If not, you might want to go buy one from your local auto parts store -- or make one.

I always wondered what those flippy things were.
To show my age, when I was in high school, I worked in a gas station PUMPING GAS FOR CUSTOMERS. I remember when these bizzarre vehicles started coming out using unleaded fuel with those little flippy doors and narrow holes. People used to hack off their catalytic convertor and ream out the hole so the leaded nozzle would fit.

I believe the Sedan has a rubber protection lining around the gas filling area when you open the gas door latch. The LB model doesn't have one, it's just bare metal all around the filler tube.
Those flaps are a real bugger to get unclasped. They hold on tight.

In the hatchback, the rear center passenger seatbelt buckle can lock into the roof when you're not using it to stop it blocking/distracting your view through the rear vision mirror.
You can adjust the brightness of your dash lights in the hatchback with the head lights on. You just have to flick the same button you do to check your km, then the final one (if you hold it down) will flick through the different levels of brightness.

I knew about this one .. But found out the hard way (by getting bogged in the carpark at our airport) that you have to have a very small tow hook to use it! The conventional hook most people would use for a 4wd etc is too big.
Cheers!

The linear Dot-It lights work great in the glove box(es) (the latter if you have a hatchback)...
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31TbN3rTPfL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
...since Toyota didn't for some reason think we'd need lights in our glovebox(es)! :iono:
These swivel, so they work great in directing the light away from your eyes at night. And if you're lucky, you'll find one with the velcro sticky circles with it; otherwise you may need foam double-sided tape!
BTW, WalMart has these for $6.85 or something like that!

That's why I put no-skid padding down in all the storage spaces. It's cheap at Walmart, and I even put it in the area in front of the instrument cluster. To cut it, I used a bucket which was curved the same, and used an exacto knife to cut it. The hardest one was the little storage space in front of the shifter, again I used a smaller bucket that was curved about the same. It took some trial and error, but it fits pretty well!

Sorry guys, I'll post some directions with pics to make it a bit clearer, I'm awful at describing things! This is for the hatchback/Liftback with the digital speedo only, as far as I am aware!
1- Turn your car on to either 'on' or 'start'.
2- Turn on your headlights.
3- Press the same little button that you press to flick through your trip meter.
http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/13/l_665b67dc38954f85b699f3e565142d5e.jpg
4- Flick through 'Trip A' and 'Trip B' til it shows up lines like this.
http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/12/l_df3a663006e548248ba64177491a5436.jpg
5- Hold down the button and it will flick through the different levels of brightness.
I hope this helps, excuse the blurry photos!
Someone with a sedan or a hatchback with an analogue speedo could confirm whether this is the same in their cars?
Cheers!

The rear bumper snaps into place. The car weighs 2200 lbs. The stock muffler comes in and goes out on the same side. The max RPM is 6500. The car stops at 117 MPH. The stock air box has a 1" inlet for air, 2 air filters that are super restraining, and weighs far too much. The engine gets hot after it's been running for awhile. USA Yarii seem to have a cross threaded A/F sensor in the exhaust manifold. The stock header is only 1" in diameter at the smallest point. The rear wiper has a clip-on it that can be broken off or cut off to allow you to change and clean it easier. Some cars do not have a cabin air filter. The stock oil is Synthetic, but the extended warranty only covers regular oil, so you have to pay $8 to get the right oil put in your car. The low jack system really does work. The correct place to plug in a Tach is at the OBD port (where the dealership plugs their thing in to read what your car is doing). The engine travels over 5" when you rev it up. The catalytic convertor acts as a resonator as well as a catalytic convertor. You can change the look of your car simply by scratching it with rocks (I have great kids, and luckily they are still alive... barely). The stock auto can go from 0-60 in 11.6 seconds. The highest recommended speed for the Yaris is 68 MPH. I will post more stuff later. Drive On!

Unless he's referring to the annoying-ness of the passenger beep... which I find is always going off when i put something heavy in the front seat. Ugh. Or even when i sometimes lean on (put pressure on it) when driving (if im adjusting myself or something, etc)
Yeah, that drives me crazy. The passenger seat used to be my space of choice for carrying milk home from the grocery store; now, not so much.

I thought there was a switch in the seat - I know there is for airbags in some cars where it won't set the airbag off unless there's something like 40 pounds on the seat.

Drive On!
Really? the yaris was filled with synthetic oil in the factory, any links?
Ok if you have power windows and power seat, you can lower your driver seat to flat just like a bed lol.

the second filter is behind the glovebox, look at page 165 of your manual, this is a cabin air filter which just makes sure clean air comes out from the a/c instead of dust and other stuff.

I don't have a link about the oil, but my car was purchased new in June this year and the oil is / was clear...I could hardly see it on the dipstick. After being driven 3000 miles, the color is now light tan.
I'm wondering about the other statement.....where is the link that the maximum top speed should be only 68 MPH?

Cheers!
I have the same indicator (weird bars graph thingy) on my trip meter as well, but I have a Thai model hatch with an analog optitron (white) with tach. Gonna try this as soon as I get off work! I always wondered what those stupid bars are. . . and the (English translated) manual states nothing of it.

Hi Debby, sorry to break it to you, but "Oil color does NOT matter. Some people feel if a oil is not black it is not doing its job.
Others feel that clear like new oil is a better oil.
Bottom line is color does not matter.

The headrest for the back seats go up and down. It took me about an hour to figure that, thinking this seat is really uncomfortable.
The engine trouble light also keeps track of when you need to change the oil. You reset it using the ignition key and the trip button.

under the front passenger seat slide handle there is a flap in the carpet
with the VIN on it
Does anyone know how many cup holders are in the Yaris Liftback. The two up front allow the airconditioner to keep the drinks very cold . Then there is one on each front door...and there may be some in the back.
The cup holders are GRAND AND SURPASS OTHER AUTOS COSTING MUCH MORE...
2 in front of the vents
2 in the front doors
One in the rear of the center console
2 in the rear doors (on my 09 5 dr that is-not sure about the 3dr)

Yes, I know we should all wear our seatbelts, and I do (95% of the time), but can someone tell me if the buckle has some sensor in it or can I get a buckle from the junk yard to plug in and stop the sound? If there is a sensor, how can I remove the buckle from the belt?
Check your Seat belt Latch (the one with the red button to release the Seat belt clip)....
There should be a connector attached to it somewhere - may have to unscrew the latch using a wrench to find it....
Disconnect the connector.... and no more Seat belt Beep....
I had to remove my Seatbelts to make way for a 4pt Racing harness

Where in Japan is the Yaris produced?
Up through 2010,
all Yaris/Vitz hatchbacks were produced at Takaoka plant and the Nagakusa plant of Toyota industries, while the Yaris/Belta sedans were produced at Iwate plant of Kanto Auto Works, a Toyota affiliate.
SOURCE:http://www.supplierbusiness.com/uploadedpdfs/Toyota_sample.pdf
Starting January 2011,
all Yari meant for export to US and Europe began to be produced at the new Ohira plant in Miyagi Prefecture (source:http://www.houseofjapan.com/auto-moto/toyota-miyagi-plant-export-batch).
**The Miyagi plant is currently not at 100% production capacity because of the earthquake (source:http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iJvWPDgLG71JCzIMPy-Dgn48ikYA?docId=dddff7114645467983ab3bae869dbc73).

There are guides about this if you search around. Long story short, you can either get a spare buckle and plug it in there, use a resistor to trick the sensor, or get lucky and ask someone at your local dealership to disable it using a scantool.

Now I want to swap in better engine air filter and look into a better air box as well. How the hell do I get LowJack to work?
- Cabin filters are under $20 at Kragen.
- 2008 Yaris uses the same high-beam bulbs as a 2008 Prius
- The rear wheels don't need alignments- just the front. and stock suspension isn't very adjustable anyway.
- Half a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil can be added to a full crank case
- With concerns of a hydroplaning incident I've moved up to 50k mile 185/65/15 from Firestone (meant for a Prius in wet weather) with no problems... w/ regular hard driving and no rubbing on bounces with max turn. I checked ;)
- With the seat folded down flat the car sleeps 4 midgets sideways in the back. 3 in sleeping bags and 2 if you can't find the fitted kind in their size
- The cigarette lighter won't work with the key in OFF
- I'm about the add a police horn to a buttin next to the emergency light switch.
- LED day time running headlights can be mounted in the fog light cups without removing them. But you still have to figure out wiring lol
- I have cheap pop off hubcaps that stick out from the tires. I use silver Hammered spray paint after sanding to fix the scratches and it looks cooler and cooler with every coat. Some bastard better not steal them
- Aftermarket window tinting looks checkered with polarized glasses on
- The front windows including the little corner glass is already factory tinted a little bit. Like %8 or somthing.
- It's hard to find your Yaris in a crowded parking lot and you've forgotten exactly where you parked because it was hiding behind that SUV all this time
- I get 32mpg because I average 80mph and I'm fine with that
- Ive run out with randoms for now

^The high-beam bulb IS the low-beam bulb. It's a dual filament H4 (9003) bulb. . . I can't see the Prius using the same bulb if it has dedicated high-beams (especially if it has HID low-beams).

Hi everybody.
I'm new on the group but I expect to be actively posting, because I love my Yaris. You can call me "My Yaris 2009 is Awesome" because since 2009, my car rules the road !!
About this thread: I'd like to discuss, how thanks to its size The Yaris fits everywhere, or how thanks to its size The Yaris it's an uncrashable car.
But today's is not the case.
No people...
Today I'd like to talk to you about something more important related to that "evil" third wiper on back window.
Hell Yeah !!,
Every Yaris/Prius owner has to deal with them.
My story begins a few months ago, when I had to change my 3 wipers manually: Piece of cake !! -I thought -
Everything gone as usual until I tried to lift the back wiper to change it. And as everybody here knows, it doesn't matter how hard I try, the wiper just rise up a little bit.
Then after months looking at my 2009 Hatchback Yaris, I found the problem.
As I'm from Mexico, it looks like I can't find the right words to explain my discovery but hey !!, an image says more than a thousand words ¿right?. So, click on this link to find the answer:

We'll meet again and thanks for reading me.

Actually it now occurs to me (looking at that video) that as easy as it was to remove the part you moded, I think you could leave it unmoded and simply remove it whenever you need to change your wiper blade...

There is an interdementional vortex located under the driver seat on the hatchback into which all things dropped with the right hand fall. It is located in a slit in the carpet just in front of the jack. You have to remove the jack and hunt by feel to attempt to retrieve anything there. But once there it is probably gone.

Oh and when you are going down a big hill, it will automatically downshift to a lower gear (liftback auto) when you hit the brakes, instead of me shifting into 3.
All the time or when cruise control is on?
You can start the car by just moving the key to the starter position and releasing it before the engine actually starts running. No need to hold the key in the starter until the engine starts anymore.
Don't all the new Toyotas do this?
maybe not a secret, but when I am driving in the morning my main road is 35mph. I stay between 35 and 40 and the car stays at a higher rpm without shifting and the car warms up pretty quick. I have an automatic which might explain it.
Just about everything does this as its for emission requirements in the US.
The highest recommended speed for the Yaris is 68 MPH. I will post more stuff later.
Where did you find that?

Do not stick lighters in the ac vents on top of the radio
they do explode
no matter how much shit people talk about the yaris its still best fun for the price in my eyes
if you dont have a rear sway bar your missing out
for long term movement of certian items a quick screwdriver to the side door panel handle pops of and allows for long term secrete stash that can easily be gotten to if need be in case of quick consumption {put alittle change in it so it makes alittle noise and covers up missing screw
back rear seat was easier to take out than i thought
change your battery every 2 half years if you drive alot
you cant imagine how much power you get back from a new battery.
front cup holders can be stuck closed with quarterz
dont let your friends know.
all in all the yaris is a fun little car and can say im thankful for it but wish i coulda had it in rear wheel drive.

Not sure if it's a secret, but if it happens to someone else, maybe my experience will help. Don't keep too much junk and plastic bags in your glove box. I had a bag get sucked into the cabin filter area and it made me think the AC ductwork came loose. I also had a hose come off the vent selection knob come off about the same time. Maybe the blockage caused it to pop off.

Deceleration Fuel Cut Off. (I speak of my knowledge of my 2008 RS 5dr liftback automatic).
When the gear selector is in D, and you are coasting for more than 3 seconds above 1250 rpm, the ECU stops sending voltage to the fuel injectors, which means no fuel is going in to the engine, and no fuel is being consumed. If you are over 1250 rpms, and move the selector to 3, 2 or L, it's instantaneous - there is no 3 second wait.

When you use the remote to lock the doors, the "unlock" button inside the car NO LONGER WORKS!
I found this out the hard way when the wife locked the keys in the trunk in a rainstorm on the weekend. If I had known this, I would have went for the trunk release first...

yo did you know that the yaris has special powers that attract chicks
Yes, but by the look of the "chicks" driving Yaris they're better know as Panthers (next stage after Cougar).

I took a little trip from the 13th of August through the 27th -- Drove through TX-OK-KS-MO-IA-NE-IA-SD-ND-MN-WI-IL-IN-MI-IN-IL-MO-OK-TX (Mainly to see a baseball game in Kansas City (hadn't been to that ballpark since the renovations), to visit a friend in ND, and to go to Four Winds in MI). I stopped in Branson, MO for 3 nights on the way back. One morning (as I was leaving Panera Bread) in Branson, I saw a 3rd Gen Yaris 3-door that had pulled in 2 spaces away from my Yaris while I was inside. It had just been waxed and had quite a few accessories. The way it looked, I assumed the owner was young. I walked around the back on the way to my car and the back window had a sticker in one corner that read 'Razorback Grandma'. In the opposite corner was a sticker shaped like a football. I imagine her grandson is on the University of Arkansas football team. A day or so after I got home I saw a white 2nd Gen Yaris 3-door at The Woodlands Mall. The rear window had a sticker on it that read SHSU MOM (Sam Houston State University), but the bumper had a sticker on it that read 'Don't Mess with Texas Grandmas'.

If you drive alone (mostly) you can remove the 3 other headrests and the ability to see out of the car increases dramatically. I boxed up the rear headrests along with the original floor mats - but I keep the passenger head rest in the back so I can pop it back in if someone is along with me.
Really amazed how it makes it easier to see out of the car

I took all 4 of my headrests out (along with the armrest) right after I got my Yaris. I have 3 headrests and my armrest stored in a box. The other headrest is at my cousin's house in California....if i'm driving my little cousin anywhere, her mom wants her to be in a seat with a headrest.

Actually it now occurs to me (looking at that video) that as easy as it was to remove the part you moded, I think you could leave it unmoded and simply remove it whenever you need to change your wiper blade...

I'd also never seen it before. I've even read posts from other members complaining about that shortcut (I think it is irritating as well and will also snip-snip). The only reason I can think of for manufacturing it that way is to perhaps help hold the blade dowb during shipping?

One thing I uncovered while fiddling with the radio (PT546-52120) in my 2012 Yaris was the EQ came preset for a five-door instead of a three-door. On page 9 of my radio manual, I learned I could set the EQ for my car's body style. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this previously, but it was news to me.

I drive ALONE mostly and the DRIVERS seat head rest is INSTALLED - I would NEVER let anyone ride in my Yaris without a head rest !!!
I keep the PASSENGER head rest in the BACK and install it before a passenger gets in - the back seat headrests are in a box in the basement, anymore than 2 people want to ride, they can take a TAXI,

That's the 2ND Generation rear head rests, they disappear into the seat (pretty cool...) The 3RD generation head rests sit on top of the seat, they do not fold or magically disappear unless you remove them...

Ahh, makes sense. I wash my Yaris either in my driveway, or (more often recently) at do-it-yourself stall car wahes (each stall has its own drain, one overhead hose ends in a 'gun' that gives you 10-12 rinse/soap/etc. options for your dollar, another overhead hose ending in a brush, side walls shared with adjacent stalls, one roof over all the stalls, and a different set of stalls for vacuuming), so removing the 'tab' wouldn't effect me. Good to know though . Also shows that 'the tab' isn't something dealers neglected to remove during delivery.

I may be wrong on this, but I think both generations (2nd and 3rd) are the same on this...and what makes/causes the difference re the rear seats is if the rear = 60/40 or bench....with bench = having the 'sit on top' headrests that you and I have, and 60/40 rear seats having the integrated rear headrests. If I'm wrong, someone will likely weigh in with the answer.

True, but for now I'm willing to take the chance. If the rear ending offender is uninsured/underinsured, I have really high limits. No complaints yet re missing headrest  (I must admit though, your post is knawing at me via my natural paranoia...when next in CA, I'll grab 1 or 2 of my 3 headrests that aren't at my cousin's house).

Mine has 3 cup holders and 6 bottle holders if you count using the cup holders to hold bottles too. I checked out the 2015 Honda Fit today and cant imagine giving up all the cleverly designed features my stunning 2008 Blazing Blue Yaris LB has for that thing. Plus that thing looks uglier than the 2014 Yaris.

Although the many available cup holders in the yaris is a great feature, their placement is terrible. A cup holder needs to be in the Centre of the vehicle, coffee goes flying everywhere on every bump and turn made in the car. They just have to be in the Centre of gravity of the car. I'd rather have two in the middle than 4 on the doors. My two cents.

I've actually found them out of the way, which is fine, because if I'm driving, I'm not having cupped beverages in the car. And whoever's in the back gets nothing.

Location of cup holders keeps your coffee warm in winter (heat on), and your drinks cold in summer (AC on).
I've always joked that Toyota would get in trouble for the placement of the cup holders, I cant remember how many times I've spilt hot coffee on my pants. I usually put a piece of paper towel in the cup holder to minimize the damage.

The napkin that comes with my coffee goes there. If it saturates the napkin, it means I haven't drunk enough coffee before getting in the car.

Tired of that pesky Maint req light?
Turn it off yourself.
step 1: put your trip odometer to trip A
Step 2: turn the car off.
Step 3: using your left hand on the key and your right hand holding down the button to reset the odometer in, turn the key to the on position and keeping holding down the button. It will do a few cirlces and show 2-4 flat lines then your mileage will come back and viola the maint req light is gone. Reset the trip odometer to normal, trip a, trip b w/e you use. Now your done, have a cookie!

To do this, turn the A/C on just like you're using it when driving.
(Blower fan on. Temperature knob in the blue zone)
And then, turn the key half-way between ACC and ON position.
(Just so that the instrument cluster doesn't power up)

I came across this one by accident. Since I had my battery disconnected, the settings on my stock stereo reset back to default values.
So, while I was adjusting the bass and treble again, I found out that they allow separate settings for CD and radio mode! Pretty clever eh.

My kid buried pennies, peanuts and rocks under the bench seat, probably through the tiny opening for the seat belt buckles. For a year, I couldn't figure out the rolly jingly noises in the back when I took a turn. He kept that a secret until I lifted the bench cushion for a track day.

the brace underneath the rear seats in the LB act as a.. well... center brace... so there's no real need to buy that under-chassis brace at all...
figured this out when i took off my seats..
I yanked my rear seat right away, and eventually bought a underneath brace. So, did you put your seat back in? I use all that space too often, plus I save a few pounds, even though it's also a little noisier I guess.
