Well, i posted it before the site went down the drain....
Just re posting since it all got deleted.

2x Diyma
re xxx 6.5
jl 300/2
kinetik hc1400
techflex/heatstrhink etc..

Finished deadening car for the meanwhile.. Added foam all throughout crevices i could. Padded up front and rear wheel humps with 1/4" inch ensolite foam..
I'll probably go in and complete the doors with Overkill and plexiglass+liquid nails for the door openings. Probably give the outer panel a good 5-6 more layers since i got some more roof guard just sittin around.

Heres a pic of my car again.. only about 3 layers. I probably got around 8-10 ish layers on it right now. About 2 gallons worth.

whats a pain is doing all of this in a weekend because of school and Carpooling.
Basically had to strip interior Friday, get it all back in on Sunday. And i dont even have the wires in...
I'll have to Strip the entire interior once again;; when i put the wires in etc..

PIA !

Here's my attempt to recompile my build log. Monday, Sept 13, 2010. LAST EDIT.
Since the forum was wiped clean several years ago, i lost a ton of my build log.
Basically.. i will be recovering and re-posting everything that happened between 10-20-2008 to 7-13-2010. The date at which i left off on, and the date i began logging.

Just to re verify, and put it out there, the project has been off and on. I haven't been working on the project for two years straight.
I started the project when i was in my junior year of high school with very limited resources and knowledge.

So here we go ?... I 'll my best to narrate the pictures... It's been a long time so forgive me if i don't remember exactly what i did.

I bought the 2 8w7's as an experiment..
I wasn't really serious on buying them until i realized how cheap they were being sold for.
I couldn't let the opportunity pass me up.. so out of curiosity i bought a pair.
I just had to put the hype to the test.

I ran across a tutorial online [diyma].. of a guy utilizing concrete tubes to make a cheap and effective enclosure.
So hey, i tried it out.

Drew up the plans, sketched it out.

And i made it happen. My first test subwoofer box! Cost me 20 bucks.

white stuff is liquid deadener.... good stuff.. you paint it on, it dries out and hardens. Next car I have, i'm going to buy a 5 gallon bucket and do some painting and buy half as much mat instead.

I haven't seen him on here for a long time, it would've been nice to hear how his installed turned out, he had some good equipment.

Curious to this as well. Not really interested in buying all that mat to deaden the car, but I'd definitely tear it apart to paint it.

^ does it come in black?

Depends on what brand you buy, I've seen some that dries gray, some light blue... I'll look around a bit. People sometimes will paint it to the underside of their wheel wells to help with that noise/vibration.

if you have access to an air compressor and paint gun it's really easy to apply. You have to apply thin coats and allow it to fully dry between coats however... so it can take awhile.

here's some I found, I make no claims on how well they work... EXCEPT the Second Skin Spectrum. That is the only stuff i have experience with, and it seemed to be a quality product. There are other brands out there too.

Wow, totally forgot about this forum.. got caught up with school.. just graduated last month.

-----

As to the questions.

no i haven't finished the project.. Long story short.

i finished creating the door pods, mounted up some tweets too
upgraded the big 3 (for those who know), liquid deadened with solarflex (roof guard from home depot),
doors/trunk deadened with butyl based deadener (damplifier).

I finished the pods last summer, (7-2009)
It's my first car & first mod ever (even before learning how to change the oil), and it took a VERY long time. I'm talking hours of sanding and re applying body filler just to correct a segment of the pod.

The reason i haven't finished the project is because within about 2 months of installing the pods.. they cracked due to the stress of mounting, Door panels have slight bends in them when they are attached, a slight bend i didn't account for when i was molding them up.

The cracks are giant or anything, but there are definitely noticeable streaks and fissures. After that, I pretty much threw in the towel... and said goodbye to audio in the yaris. For me to repair them, i'm guessing it would take another solid 10 hours of work.

I'll provide more information/pictures if anyone is interested. I guess i'm just needing a little bump of inspiration before i start back on again.. I have a JL 13w6v2 in the trunk right now paired with a JL 500/1. the RE's are being pushed by a JL 300/2.
and a DIYMA r12 and custon Si mag v2 12" sittin in the basement :[.

Here's what they look like anyway

Okay..the cracks in the panels...

Can you post a picture? I think I have several solutions (if you don't already).

I take it by the missing A-pillars, that's where your tweets are? I also have some insights into tuning with the mids low and tweets up high...IF you want to hear the ideas.

Let's get this bad boy finished! You needed friends like me to drive you on. 10 hours of work...you should see my time logged with my A-pillars. That's why I'm so positive that we can get this going for you. It's really a motivation factor.

Oh and Cali...there's a product out that's called Lizard Skin. It is indeed black (or at least dark DARK gray). I used it in my sub enclosure and my kickpods.

thanks sqcomp,

yeah, tweets are in pvc cups mounted in the a-pillars. Mids in the door pods.

And I know what you mean, 10 hours really is nothing compared to the time it takes to do these installs. But i feel like i screwed up with the doors from the get go.. I'll post pictures later tonight (after work) so you'll know what i'm talking about; I'll include a majority of my build log and extra photos of my setup as well.

The pods are essentially 90% body filler surrounding a speaker ring... I didn't use glass/resin or anything ..

How are you feeling about taking the panels out and starting over? I'm just not too hot on an enclosure made out of filler. I say that being absolutely unafraid of glassing. You've noticed that I've had a little time with it. Now I know why you said you have cracks. Filler is the culprit. I have an idea though, that may save the day while not making the filler pods a loss...

The tweeters...you mentioned that they're in cups. Throw pictures of the tweeter's back and the cups that they're in.

I was looking at the passenger's side A-pillar. I know you don't have anything but tweeters up there BUT, that white molex clippie thing? That's a universal clip for the antenna. You can actually gain a 1/2" by removing that clip and it's SINGLE PIN inside the huge clip and soldering the two ends together...Not that you need to or anything. I just mentioned it out of my need for a little room because of my midrange in that location.

how are the RE XXX 6's? now that you've had a long time to listen to them.

The RE's are fricken amazing. I can't stand listening to music anywhere but in my car. (not including studio headphones). I will be honest in saying that i do not have other 'high end' woofers to compare them to. They reproduce techno/RnB/hiphop genres the best, strong & full when songs are bassy. They also push a fair amount of air.

downside : They're way too big... like SERIOUSLY.

How are you feeling about taking the panels out and starting over? I'm just not too hot on an enclosure made out of filler. I say that being absolutely unafraid of glassing. You've noticed that I've had a little time with it. Now I know why you said you have cracks. Filler is the culprit. Yeah.. i discovered glassing AFTER i finished layering 20 stacks of evercoat. I don't think that there is a possibility at all in mounting the mids in the a-pillars.. it would be a vision hazard for sure :P. But hey! i'm open to all suggestions/ideas..as you can tell i'm all about crazy. The tweeters are shallow though, i'd say 1.5"--i will snap some pics of them tomorrow.

Here's an idea of the mounting depth on the mids.

Sniff sniff** It pains me to link up such ugly pictures. Anyways, 5 minutes after taking the pic, i grabbed some sand paper and began working away.. I ended up removing a great deal of filler. The problem was that the filler was barely adhering to the panel at all, so i took a screwdriver and chipped away layers of filler that were essentially 'hanging'.

http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq137/wubera/Picture10482.jpg

Next plans : Buy some evercoat hardener (i lost mine :[) And get to work... Damn i wish i used a kitty hair foundation... Oh well life goes on.

Trunk update :

http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq137/wubera/simag2.jpg

Sketched a quick 2 minutes layout on Paint. I will be using an SI Mag v4 (won it in a DIYMA give-away last year :D). I will be pushing it with a DLS twin a3, and mono bridge it to 870w to 2 ohms dvc. I'm hoping to somehow create a space to submerge the amps under the false floor. I don't want to sacrifice my spare tire accessibility however, so I'm trying to formulate an idea to create a 'hinged' door that will allow me to access it, (noted by red line)

I might also submerge the box into the false floor, and do an inverted mount on the si mag.

6 hours of research and compiling materials
2 clicks.
roughly 300$ spent.

bought more equip.. useless but cool misc stuff (techflex/heatshrink/tape/glue/gaskets)
picked up a plunge router, circle jig (shoulda just DiY'd it), bits, and evercoat hardener.

Should be coming in some time next week. . . As soon as the hardener comes in, i'm going to start layering the doors back up.

I can't believe how much money i'm spending on tools/equipment..
Word, i should have done this from the get go.

hide those hinges. All it would take is some router work underneath. Make considerations for the wires into and out of the amplifiers and the board underneath; use grommets to pass the wire through the threshold of the mounting board. Map out the wiring run underneath that. Use little cable clamps ad 1/4" screws for the wiring. Think about techflex and heatshrink if you're going this far already. Think hard about the location of the distro block in reference to signal wires. Are those amps to scale? I'd almost say round the edges on the plexi and the sub enclosre to flow the look. I'm biased however, I've been seeing nothing but sharp edges dissapear for weeks off my pillars...

Okay..I just looked at your doors. No wonder you have cracking. There is nothing really holding the "pod" onto the door. You notice that shrinkage occurs with that filler, don't you (i.e. cracking)? What you need is fiberglass. Your molding skills seem to be fine, but you need the sub structure underneath more than anything. You've got to think about why and where the cracks are happening. The why is because of the nature of the oil based formulation itself, the temperature changes, AND the consistant use of the doors. Is the driver's door worse?

We can take the baffle, use some tee nuts or thread serts, make a frame, stretch some fleece on the outside...I'm trying to think if using a staple gun or straight CA would do the trick...

Anyway, resin (Bondcoat B poly resin from TAP Plastics-it's $30 a gallon) that down, bolster the inside and outside with some heavier thickness glass...THEN do the initial sanding, then your cover coats you're so good at.

They are, to the best of my abilities scaled.

The sketchup isn't a 100% accurate representation of where things are going to be/how they will exactly look. Just wanted to have a better visual concept for the design.

The sub is going to be glassed to fit. The face of the enclosure will most likely be glassed as well. I have techflex/heatshrink and connectors all on its way, wire layout and pathing will be routed and cable clamped from underneath as you said.

I'm not sure how much pre planning i'll be able to do beforehand, i almost feel like i'll just have to lay it all out and play with it in order to get the perfect fit.

Reinforcing the glassed plug
An MDF base will be attached to the fiberglass plug. The enclosure is going to be half mdf, half glass. Since the pictures, i have added about 3-4 layers of chopped mat in the corners, and 2-3 layers of cloth weave in the general areas. I have begun laying down Kyntex Biaxial--. The end game will consist of 7-8 layers. Probably more in select parts. Estimations : 2-3 of chopped, 2-3 cloth weave, and 2 layers of Kyntex Biaxials.

The kyntex really saves a shit load of time, and can conform to tight corners-- just takes a little extra resin. I may also resin in some nylon ropes.. The more the merrier-- Once the mdf pieces are kitty haired, and glassed in -- i will add some braces through the enclosure.

Change in amp placement
I'm shying away from the whole ' Amp wall ' and ' false floor ' idea.. I figured that since i am only doing the install for myself, i don't have to go out my way to make things flashy. Instead i'm going to fab a 'hanging shelf' from the rear deck so that it won't interfere with the spare tire accessibility and general trunk spacing. Idk why i haven't thought of it before. I need to find a good way to snake the wires.

Update on Door pods
Oh yea.. One more thing. refinished the doors pods. reinforced, sculpted and everything.. So far no sign of the slightest of flex. My inference was correct: The cracking wasn't due to heat nor tension of opening/closing the door (The driver side was less cracked than the passenger), they cracked because they were sculpted before installed. Once the panel was attached to the door, they conformed to the fitment and thus warped the pod. This time around, i worked straight from the door, without uninstalling the panel. Was a bit harder, but everything is good now.

Future plans
- Redo Tweeters in a-pillars
Once i finish the trunk, i will most likely glass the tweeters into the a-pillars. The cheapy pvc's are annoying to look at. Since the tweets are already aimed, molding them on should be a breeze *cross fingers*. They will be vinyl wrapped so i won't have to worry too much about getting a perfect finish.
- Create a face on trunk lid
Right now, the trunk lid is covered in 2 layers of damplifier pro + 2-3mm of liquid deadener. To sum it up, it looks like ass. So i might create a trunk lid face to cover it all up.. this will be for aesthetics.

Equipment on its way: makita jigsaw + rotary dremel. Pyramid Acoustic Foam.

i gave the plug a good strength test this morning.. Holy crap its tough..
My jigsaw should be arriving later today, so i'll be mounting the base mdf piece really really soon.
I thought about it, and realized that i don't have very much security planned out.
My first security mod will be creating a flush cardboard piece that will hide my deck. Then wrap it in vinyl.

------------
Anyone know the best way to attach MDF to fglass ? I was thinking, screwing the pieces together first. Cut some holes so the resin will have something to attach to. Sludge on a nice thick layer of kitty hair to fill the gap where the MDF meets glass. Then CSM -> cloth weave -> 2 layers of Kyntex -> Cloth weave.

Thoughts ?

Boy.. Fiberglassing isn't hard.. but it's really just a nuisance to work with simply because its so messy!

I need some advice guys. Need to attach several pieces of MDF to the fiberglass. Anyone have any ideas ??

I was thinking on using some epoxy caulk to attach the piece together... Then a mixture of resin + tiny bits of Chopped mat poured on top of the caulk bond to fill all gaps and create a stronger bond. Once that dries, i will layer it with glass. I'm contemplating screws too..

I know there's a better way to do it.. help anyone--

Anyways heres todays updates.

The thing is, i have a gap where the glass meets the mdf. Not major, but perhaps a 1/4" gap i want to fill up.

Yeah, i will probably end up doing a milkshake batch on the inside of the box.. then coat it with some liquid deadening. Way overkill for a single 12. But whateva!

WOW.

Alright.. I'll admit.. I didn't get much done today. I was way too busy fooling around..

Since i'm planning on mounting the amps to the underside of the rear deck, i stripped a little interior. The C-pillars gave me a headache.. The fricken metal anchors SQCOMP was talking about-- Holy crap. I ended up just yanking them towards the front of the car with my body weight, but there's a weird way you have to turn them...

Anyways, i heres a quick shot of the rear deck removed..

I find myself just dreaming of my install whenever i'm bored at work.
Just have to put in work little by little every day.

Just an update guys: Sorry no pics. I'll shoot some tomorrow.
I attached the base mdf piece to the plug. Basically just used resin reinforced w/ saw dust + tiny specs chopped mat.. then stuff it with csm as far down as i could. Today i reinforced the seam with more kyntex.. 1 layer on top. 1 on bottom.

I also cut out the side mdf's.. So far so good.

To do
• reinforce the seam.. (maybe 1 more layer..)
• attach mdf sides
• reinforce sides
• trim fiberglass
• measure out, cut out top face
• cut ring into face
• attach face, reinforce it
• add carpet/vinyl -> finish

Then its on to the amp rack (shelf)

I actually lost the pivot pin for the jasper jig.. I felt screwed at first. I ended up grabbing a nail, and wrapping it with several layers of scotch tape to increase the thickness. I then stuck it through the bottom of the face. Voiilaa, problem fixed.
1st cut in...
http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq137/wubera/IMG_1208.jpg

Many.. cuts later..
Here's a raw picture.. the flushed routing hasn't been cleaned off/sanded down. You get the basic idea though. I decided to utilize the mdf ring i cut out a couple weeks ago... I don't like wasting :]. Anyways, the speaker ring is going to act as a border for the sub woofer.. I cut a little extra on the face flushing to give leeway for the carpet or vinyl wrapping. With the border, i can also throw in a little two tone. Also -- The edges of the speaker ring have yet to be rounded out.
http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq137/wubera/IMG_1217.jpg

Face, speaker ring, routed top. If you look closely.. I didn't trim the fiberglass tub straight :[.. So there is a bit of a slant when i lay down the face. No problem though-- I will attach the face onto the mdf (which is flush), then reglass the gap closed.

I figured that while i'm at it.. I might as well overkill the tub.. Shoot no harm.
Since i have 5 gallons of spectrum at my disposal.. I didn't think it would hurt if i lined the tub and face.. Here's a pic of the first layer of the spectrum applied. I will probably only add 1-2 layers... It's not even needed. And I don't want to mess up the internal volume, this stuff can get thick.

An Update moment--

sqcomp got me interested in Hybrid.. So i did a little digging. Contacted Scott buwalda and asked for a retail price sheet.
He's selling b-stock 'damaged' box equipment for 25% off retail price.

I was thinking on buying a set of legatias... and replacing the RE xxx comps i have installed.
hen it hit me... Why do i want to put 500$ speakers in a car i don't even own. Yeah..-- it's still my parents car...Yes i'm 18.
Don't get me wrong, i love the yaris to death (easiest car i've ever driven)... i drive it everyday, pay insurance, maintain it. But i didn't buy it. I'm grateful enough that they're allowing me to do my install.

Perhaps on my next install.. I'll throw in a set of Legatias. I'll probably rip out the uber deck from the yaris and replace it with something cheaper--
I'd probably throw a pair of DIYMA r12's for bass... Maybe the new si slim sub...maybe a ssa.

*man this is bad, i'm not even done with the yaris and i'm thinking on my next install*
I got an itch :|

Truth be told, i hacked up the yaris pretty good. (Like my body filler door pods.. WOW) I'll admit, many things were done rashly because i didn't have enough knowledge nor resources to do things right the first time. I started the install w/o a job. But boy, my next install will be clean as hell. I really feel like i'm learning something here, and that's what counts.
Anyways, done with my emo moments. On to the build log! -- Going to add on another layer of spectrum on the tub and face before i go to work.

Shit, so i just realized..
the SI Mag v4 ... has dual voice coils. :|
I totally forgot, so instead of powering 870watts @ 2Ω that i had originally planned.
It will be getting 1000watts @ 1Ω

Recommendation is .85-1 cu feet of airspace.
Power rating : 600-1000w
Therefore, no problem with the increase in power.

However -- the enclosure that i built is ~.85 cubic ft.
I'm wondering what will happen when i juice that sucker 1,000 watts. Hopefully not much.
It's not like the sub is ever going to get a constant 1,000 watts..

More power=more space?
It's def. going to sound different... I am planning on adding 1pound of polyfill. Hopefully that'll counter the difference of .15 cubic ft.

Kind of looks funny though, but what can you do. Only 5.5".. Can you say shallow beast?
No problems with hinge clearance too.. I have tons of space.
Don't worry guys, the mdf portions are perfectly straight. It looks off because the mdf face is slouching on the slant of the fiberglass(bad trim job).

I'm trying to think of a creative way to terminate my wiring.

When you invert a sub like that does it alter the way that it sounds? Seems like it would shove all the sound down into the box. I mean yeah you'll hear it I'm sure, but it seems like it would alter the way that it sounds. Also, would it generate enough pressure to damage the box? I know I've seen some people who have broken their back glass with subs before.

FcukThis
09-10-2010, 05:36 PM
The sound, in theory should be the same. At least that's what i've read everywhere. You just have to reverse polarity accordingly if i'm correct??

Sound comes out both ends.

As far as pressure, i'm not sure what the affects are when you invert it. But i really doubt more pressure is produced when inverting, if so-- not nearly enough to damage the box i made. :].

I will do some more researching. It's def. something i should take into account.

Can anyone give any definite answers? Feel free to chime in guys.

Palmer812
09-10-2010, 09:21 PM
I don't have any scientific proof but I would think that if the airspace was correct the inverted sub wouldn't hit as hard because you are reducing the effective piston area thus moving less air. As far as reversing the polarity try it both ways. When I do subwoofers I listen to them in phase and out of phase and choose which sounds the best. Btw you will like that SI sub. I have had a few of them in the past. I am friends with the owner and have had a few demo units over the years.

Palmer - Have you had any experience with the si v4?

I tested it a long while ago, (wrote a review in exchange for the sub). 1cu airspace, 1000 watts, polyfilled. Sounded great.

I would mount it normally... but i'm not sure how it'd sound with the small airspace..
That would be .85cu - driver's volume displacement. pumped 1,000 watts.

I'm not sure whether or not the driver is designed for inverting.. (Good thing to point out derick) Perhaps i'll shoot stereo integrity an email.

What's probably going to happen-- is that i'll try it both ways. Hear the difference for myself, and of course, pick the one i like more.

--------
Update on build log
Cut out another 3/4" mdf ring, mounted it underneath the face. This is going to add extra support to the sub. Bumping the total "ring" thickness to about 1 1/4".. It was really shallow (~1/2" because i countersunk the top ring)..
I'll post pics tomorrow.

I also took a 3/8" roundover to the outer speaker ring.

2 more layers of spectrum will be added to the plug!.. Just because!

What happened with the backside so that you needed to raise the baffle? Was it just how you cut it down?

I would imagine that you're going to find it difficult to just lay mat over the outside and achieve the result you're looking for. Do you have some kitty hair (long strand fiberglass filler)? I think that's what the 1/2" long strand fiberglass filler is in one of your pictures (don't forget the hardener). I would fill it from the inside if at all possible THEN trim it down from the outside. This is what I did to fill all my seams...eF titebond or silicone. I just glassed my seams.

This is what I used:

http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?mwsId=66666UuZjcFSLXTtNXM2lXT6EV76E bHSHVs6EVs6E666666--

I'm thinking that'll solve the issue. No sweat needed.

FcukThis

Yeah, i was going to create a kitty hair mix.

It's essentially thick milkshake with long strand fiberglass correct ?
[body filler , resin. both hardeners.]

That's a good idea though-- starting from the inside of the plug. I was really only going to do it from the outside.. Silly me. I'll probably end up doing it from the inside as best i can, then the outside. Then trim it down.

The ring on the backside of the baffle is only there to reinforce the speaker ring.
The top ring is simply a vanity piece.

I think that 1/2" stuff you bought will work without adding resin.

Just to test it, add some cream hardener to a small little dab and see how it finishes.

I'm thinking that you'll do fine with the inside-out plugging...okay, that just sounded wrong. ANYWAY, you know what I mean. Let's see some progress pics with that when you have some.
