$7 Ram air intake pictorial

The stock arrangement of pulling air from directly behind the radiator seems to leave room for improvement. Tonight I put the non-functional "brake vent" fog light block off plate to use as a source of air for a ram air cold air intake using $7 or so worth of parts a dremel tool and a drill.

First I pulled the stock intake snorkel off the air box and cut away the mounting tab (pic 1). After pulling off the fog light plate I used a dremel tool with a cut off wheel and sanding drum to cut out slots in it (pic 2). I then gathered my $7 of parts, a funnel and a piece of flexible air tube. 1 3/4" will fit in the end of the snorkel and 2 1/4" will fit out side. I could not find any 2 1/4" so I used the smaller size. (pic 3). Next I cut off the ends of the funnel so it fit against the back of the fog light plate and mounted it using zip ties (pic 4 and 5).

Here is what the business end of the completed scoop looks like. (pic 6). I painted the inside of the funnel black (the blue clashed with my red car:biggrin:) Next I drilled a few holes in the back of the scoop to mount the air tube (don't zip tie it until it's all in the car). (pic 7) It is a good idea to reinforce the tube anywhere holes have been poked in it because it will tear very easily.

Because of the angle of the funnel I used I had to cut away a tab on the bumper (pic 8). Snap the scoop into the bumper and crawl under the car. It is much easier to work on these next steps with the cover in front of the wheel free (3 10mm bolts). Zip tie the tube to the scoop and connect the other end of the tube to the stock snorkel mounted upside down from its stock position (pic 9 and 10)

Here is the final product from the outside of the car. I later came back with a black sharpie to get rid of any traces of blue.

If I were to do this again I would not cut as much of the fog light plate out to prevent the bumper cover from showing through.

I bet that engine loves the influx of cool air. Great thinking.
If you can study to see if you can get any type of HP or MPG gain.
You should get a boost in one of those.

i've seen tests on ram air's like this done on porsche's and the most anyone has ever recorded in a 997GT3 was 1.1psi at its top speed. something like this would probably only 0.1psi at 160kmh. But i mean, why not? It cost you $7..

I did something like this with my tC.......I have a SRI on it and on long drives in the summer I noticed the engine did not respond as well.....

After installing the duct work to my grilles i get cold air intothe engine bay and with my Kami hood it gets hot out.......no more lag on hot days anymore......

The travel distance might be abit long, try using flexible tubes. thats what i did. From Physics (flow Dynamics): Why would the total distance make a diff? Dont you want the box at positive pressure and the other stuff does not matter much once you are going from a resonance tuned system to a pressurised system? At the most, possibly at slow speed you may loose some long tube resonance tuning.

I am very glad some one is trying there own stuff and not just droppin 300 bucks on a cheap chinese 20$ intake. Smart - look out for water management though - will the air box dump the rain for you? nZo body has big enough balls to put a scoop on the hood just oover the air box? Any junk hood out ther, anyobody.
The Yaris hood are tiny in the width (which I like the wide better than the long) ;o
