View Full Version : The thread with the single, hidden sub over spare tire?
IsLNdbOi

A couple of weeks ago a member here posted a really nice sub mount he did. He mounted a single large subwoofer over the spare tire. I think he constructed a new cover (the large rectangle cover that goes over the tire to hide it and forms the surface of the trunk / hatch) that had a hole in it the size of the sub. It was a really clean and nice looking install.
If you're the one who posted that thread or if anyone has pics. or the thread saved, can you please post it again?
Thanks.

Ok, I found it. It has two subs as well, not one:

I want mine that clean, but with one 12" sub instead of two 10"-ers. I wish there was a more detailed guide on how to do this install. I've never made any sub enclosure.

I'll clarify that he had to remove his spare to do that. Just no space otherwise.

Thanks guys.
firemachine, you helped Boydstir with that install? Would one of those shallow mount subs. fit w/o having to remove the spare tire?
TinyGiant, sorry, but I was referring to the one done by Boydstir / firemachine69. I saw the one you reposted, but the one by Boydstir is the one I remembered.

Lift up the cover and have a look for yourself. There's maybe an inch of spare space. It's a well-used technique (removing the spare and carrying a can of fix-a-flat, and a CAA/AAA membership card), but you can figure out the downside of it.

I thought that there would be space for at least a 10" shallow mount sub w/o having to remove the tire. Looks like the sub could "fit" in / over the indented / center part of the tire.

they make woofer boxes that fit in the spare tire too.. you might consider that if you are worried about a flat

Cool. Mind posting a link to one? What size sub would fit in one of these boxes? Also, can this type of box be installed the way firemachine and you (TinyGiant) installed your subs? I really just want a single 12" sub (shallow mount if it'll let it fit w/o having to remove the spare tire).

That's interesting. I want a cover like boydstir's that has the hole for the sub that the sub rests in. It would sit over the tire like this one. I'm looking at this slim 12" Alpine sub at Crutchfield. Need to find someone that knows how to work with fiberglass and has made sub enclosures before.

I have a big box in mine right now and want to switch to one high end sub in the floor but I carry these big Tupperware boxes in my trunk. Will this kill the sound?
Also what would it do to the sound to have a single sub and a passive vent/grill in the floor also?

IsLNdbOi how did that spare tire sub enclosure work out that you bought from Duffman?

why do you need a 12" there isn't a huge difference between 10 & 12" subs in terms of output (given they have the same motors and similar T/S specs). 10's work properly in smaller boxes however. If you are looking for some bass in a small space... forget the single 12" and go with either a 10" or dual 8's.

12's move more air 10's are punchier.. I always opt for 10" subs

I changed my mind and got a 10" shallow Pioneer sub.. I've already paid Duffman for the custom box. He's already done making it, just waiting for him to test it in a Yaris. He's been going to one of the Toyota dealers near him for the past week, but they won't even let him try placing it in the spare tire of any of their Yarii so he's going to try another Toyota dealer this week.
I told him that I want to make sure it fits before he sends it because I don't want to deal w/ back and forth shipping costs if it doesn't fit perfectly and I have to send it back to him.
Oh, here's some of the stuff he sells:

please let me know how it goes once you get it installed. I plan to buy one premade from him as . I have a 4 channel amp powering my 4 speakers i could bridge the rear channels to power the sub while using the other 2 for the fronts so it would be perfect =)

Duffman has been waiting for his local Toyota dealers to get the 5-door LBs in stock. I emailed him today because I searched his local Toyota dealers' inventories and all of them now have at least one 5-door LB in stock. Hopefully, he can send me all the stuff soon.

too bad there isnt a way to utilize the knob that tightens the spare down in the back.. if you could tighten the sub down onto the car you'd get some killer resonance..
looks sweet though :)

one 10" is plenty for our little cars.. i finally tuned in my system and got it where i want it and it booms

Duffman shipped the stuff out today so I should have them by next Wednesday. I'm getting a new Pioneer FH-B8000BT this Friday and I have this sub.:

and this amp.:

For now, it's going to be a new HU, mono. amp. and sub.. Looking for a place that can make me new A-Pillar covers with integrated tweeter mounts before I replace the stock speakers.

Just an FYI, I've a couple ideas on how to make a version of the single sub box that duffman made able to utilize the spare tire bolt down for more resonance and still be removable for tire access. I'll keep you posted, and I may be posting for feedback.
