View Full Version : Post pics of cylinder head (engine) covers here

I know folks have posted some incredible pics of custom cylinder head covers. I remember seeing some carbon covers (someday!) ...and some real fancy paint jobs.
Since I'm down in Tampa, I wanted something that said TROPICAL ...and wanted to keep the blue theme of my Blazing Blue beauty. So I tried my hand at painting a simple scene ...a moonlit tropical night. I'm not an artist (as you can see :) ...but it makes me smile every time I pop the hood:

OK, so let's see what other folks have done. Let's replace some of those lost pics!

I like how guys made use of the shapes on the cover for your artwork. Really clever. Also I was unaware that pandas like burgers. You learn something everyday.

I need to clean it up, do some trimming on it and freshen up the paint but here is the start of my customized engine cover. Should be fun at the gas station.

I like yours, did mine much the same. The color of mine doesn't come out well in the pic, its a lot closer to the color of yours. And yes, I need to detail my engine bay.

Needs a good detail, doesn't it...?

Here is mine I did a couple days ago. After removing Engine Cover Soaked it in bath tub for about twenty minutes with dish soap. Then dried it, sanded it and cleaned it up further with rubbing alcohol. Then I used painter's tape and taped up the Toyota and vvti-i lettering. Then I took a razor blade and trimmed the edges of the tape so that the lettering would be perfectly and cleanly cropped with black highlights around it where the surface raises a bit on each letter. Then I sprayed with some adhesive promoter two light coats. Then within ten minutes of second adhesive coat began applying the paint.
Matched my paint as closeley as possible with some Old Ford Blue high temp 500 degree Rustoleum Engine Enamel. Applied three layers of paint. After an hour and a half I removed the painter's tape from the lettering and mounted the White Micro Image Sticker while paint was dry to touch but not completely cured. Then let sit overnight and installed back on my engine the next morning.

These are really neat. I have yet to open the hood (1 1/2 days old) being it's dark when I go to work and it's dark when I get home. But this weekend, I'll have ideas.

I actually took mine off and threw it in the trash. They're pointless and ugly. I love the look of a DOHC cam cover

How do you go about painting the cylinder cover.
Looking to do that on my 2010 yaris

Spray paint works, make sure it's rated for high-heat and will bond to plastic. Prep is simple, wash and de-grease the cover, prime it, then paint it. Pretty simple. Also helps to do a light sanding before painting.

LOL WTF :D
Domo FTW!
thanks...im gonna touch a few spots up today and clear coat it. might post another pic with it on and in the sunlight.
DOMO!!!!! it looks cool some of the edges are a little rough but I'm sure it wasn't exactly easy.
it was not easy at all...i touched it up and lined everything in black today so it looks much better. Im fixin to go pick up the clear coat and pop it all back on. you can definitely tell it was hand painted but i feel like it gives it some character

I did my engine cover last weekend and let it cure for a week before putting it back on. I think it turned out pretty good... you can see the primer where the tape was. :frown: I think I'll take a sharpie to it soon. For now, enjoy! I'll detail my engine probably this coming weekend after the wind dies down.

Juju, what an imagination. What type of paint did you use? Would have to be a high temp paint right?

I did mine last night. it turned out terrible. I used rust-olium 2x painters touch.
I had trouble trimming the tape around the bumps and the emblem. I gave up on the emblem and just painted it black. it looks ok except around the bumps. i'm going to strip it and try a different way...

ha! that's my facebook avatar!
my car is polar white, with black accents, so I painted it white and black. it looks ok, but I had trouble trimming in the bumps in the back, so they are not-so round/oval. i'm going to sand it down and do a hydro dip/hydro image transfer. it looks so nice. i'm going to do the fuse boxes and airbox as well...
