Throttle position used as cruise control? HELP

I need some help with a project I'm working on. I'm trying to figure out a way to install a dial of some sort to control the throttle position. It would act as a type of cruise control though my speed would fluctuate as the terrain changed. I know that the yaris has a drive by wire throttle system so I'm wondering if any of you have seen something that would electronically lock-in a throttle position and disengage when the clutch or brake were pressed.

Wait, I don't get what hes saying. A cruise control IS a throttle control. A cruise control also turns off when you tap the brake, or hit the clutch. Soo... I don't quite understand what else he could be looking for.

Cruise control regulates the vehicle speed by controlling the throttle. He wants to just control the throttle position without worrying about speed. I assume that the purpose would be to allow tight control of fuel usage.

Besides the brake killing it, I would think to keep it safe you would also need to have a vehicle speed cut-off to keep it from running away when going down hill.

You're probably thinking of a throttle lock like what is commonly is used on many motorcycles. Unfortunately, all the bikes that use those have throttle cables, not electrical "fly-by-wire" throttle controls.

All modern cruise controls make use of computerized "black boxes" to control the vehicle speed, either built-in or aftermarket (the Rostra comes to mind, with two boxes). What you're asking for would be quite an engineering project. And you would probably the only customer... :frown:

What you are looking for is a potentiometer with the same resistance curve as your throttle pedal sensor. You'd need to use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance of the pedal to get the right one. Then you need a 12 volt ice-cube relay with a start button and a seal-in to transfer control from the pedal to your new dial. The brake light switch could be used to disengage your control transfer relay if it had a resister in it's ground path of the right size. I've thought about doing this project as a DIY. You can get better mileage with this setup under hyper-mile concepts because you scrub off speed up hill and pick up speed down hill. I've already got Rostra cruise, but I think your a-barkin up the right tree with this concept.

Look through the technical manuals posted in the DIY section. The electronic throttle uses two circuits (for safety in case one fails) and seems pretty straightforward...
