This used to be a pretty popular thread before the hack. Hopefully we can get it going again!

As a rule of thumb, try to keep it short and sweet. A little description/explanation is fine, but please let's not turn this into a conversation thread. TIA

BEST INVESTMENT: NST Short Shift Kit (http://yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9529)
NST is constantly coming out with great products for our beloved yarii, and the short shift kit is an excellent example of this. It makes the Yaris shift like a more expensive car, and the price definitely won't break the bank. I recommend both stages 1 and 2, but the first stage is more noticeable.

WORST INVESTMENT: 17" Wheels
I don't recommend anything larger than 16" for Mexico roads. Of course this may/may not apply for some people elsewhere, but you should seriously consider a smaller diameter if the roads you frequent are not well maintained.

WORTHY MENTIONS:
NST Pulley kit (http://yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4737)
The difference is felt instantly. Great price/performance ratio.

1ZZ Throttle Body
Same reasons as above, plus it was a fun DIY project.

UltraRacing 23mm sway bar (http://shop.microimageonline.com/product.sc?productId=125&categoryId=4)
Stability has been greatly improved; another "should've come stock" item.

Best Investment: Limo Tint
Privacy and protection from the heat in TEXAS? A MUST have! D:

Worst Investment: Custom Exhaust
Deep, loud, cop magnet and annoying (To others i'm sure)

Worthy Mention: Tanabe DF210
I almost put this in best investment, but in Texas, the heat protection is definitely more crucial. :\ Absolutely love the new stance and handling. Much much more confidence in harder turns.

Best Investiment: Tein Basic Damper Coilovers-
Best feeling overall, cornering is awesome and very superior to that of just springs alone.

Worst Investiment: JVC Ipod Adaptor-
Only reason I hate it, because it disabled my CD player, so I can only use the Ipod, or my CD player. Not Both...

Worthy Mention: NST Pulleys-
I dont have them yet, but I am sure regardless that they will be awesome when I do!

TEHxFALLEN V1.2
10-26-2008, 05:21 AM
Best Investiment: TRD shocks + Tanabe DF210s + TRD rear sway bar.
-I no longer do I look like a moon rover, and I handle much better!
Worst Investiment: None
-I do my research before cashing out on something.

Worthy Mention:Greddy Ti-C
Car no longer sounds like a sewing machine lol

Worthy Mention: Reverse Parking Sensors with LCD screen.

BEST INVESTMENT: Tanabe NF210s & TRD Sportiva Shocks.. They "complete" my wheel choice.

WORST INVESTMENT: Pulstar Pulse Plugs.. Though I enjoyed the performace "boost" by coils didn't. After running them for 6 weeks they "burned" one of my coils. The Yaris's coils couldn't handle the high energy pulse plugs. Fortunately, Pulstar stood behind their product and reimbursed me for the replacement of the coil. Cool !!

HONORABLE MENTION: NST SSK ... Wow !! The difference in shifting with this jewel is just "stupid different" !!

Best investement Taking money out of Janus funds in March to buy the Yaris with one check in April.

Worse investment None. I'm just buying gas and maintaince and keeping the car as a daily commuter. Plan to keep the car for 15 years.

Best investment: Great on gas for basic transportation.

Worse investment: Could've used a little more backseat space.

Worthy Mention: Automatically attract attention during high gas prices. Occasional chick-magnet.

Best: The clear bra  (3m clear film)

Worste: I bought a Celtic Woman CD for my Yaris, didn't like it like I thought I would

Honorable Mention: Beck/Arnley filters

Best investment(s): NST crank pulley, TWM short shifter, reclining bucket seats, coilovers - makes the car drive much more responsively/sportily

Worst investments: 18" wheels (too fragile/heavy), couple useless engine gizmos...

Honorable mention: Redlinegoods leather shift boot. No real function but to look good, and it does

Kaotic Lazagna
12-17-2008, 05:33 AM
Best Investment: Either my suspension mods or the Thai Vios spoiler & grill (both changes the looks of the car dramatically).

Worst Investment: None, but if I had to choose something, it would be the Falken Ziex 912's (saying this because they are less gripy and weigh more than the Yokohama Parada Spec-2's that I had on previously).

Worthy Mention: NST CR-Lite crank pulley. Quickens the revs.

best investment/bought it when it first came out $100 less than it is now

BEST INVESTMENT: Alpine Type X sound system
It took me a long time to source all of the pieces of the system for reasonable prices, but once I got it all in I knew I went the right route. I've been an Alpine fanboy since I was in high school, and this was my dream system. Well, I'm 23, I'm a music nut, and I bang my tunes on my dream system. It is exactly what I expected when I decided to keep my whole system Alpine. Its refuckingdiculous. Not too loud, not too much bass, not too high, not too low... absolute American-made perfection. You can take your Pioneer, JVC and whatever else and shove it. Nobody touches Alpine when it comes to SQ.

WORST INVESTMENT: 17" wheels
I bought, I rocked, I hated, I sold. My 15" Heliums are doing MUCH better by me, and there was a noticable difference in the way the car drove as soon as I shed that 10 pounds per corner.

WORTHY MENTION: HKS axle-back exhaust
I'm young enough not to give a shit if my exhaust is loud, and houses here are spread out enough so that the neighbors agree. This was probably my most rewarding mod, mostly because I got it from our good friend Thomas and it is totally unique to my car. It is loud, sure... but it sounds so right!

my best investment.. is the yaris itself....hehehe i know it sound cheezy.. but it is..

Best investmentThe yaris itself.

Worst investment Alpine CDA-9855, Precision power A600/4 amplifier, A/D/S 345CS component speakers and a 400$ install/custom job.

Worthy mention The S trim kit (known as the Aero kit in Canada) for the sedan is a great addition to the car. Without it, even the sedan looks like an egg :P

darkmoon87
02-13-2009, 12:54 AM
Best Investment: NST SSK (I drive with the seat pushed all the way to the back for more comfortable legroom, but without NST SSK, it was a little hard to push the gear into 5th that I had to ues my middle finger to barely put it in gear.)

Worst Investment: Well...this is why I am in this thread. Not trying to make any bad investment. Which means, none so far for me.

BEST INVESTMENT: The rear window wiper option. I didn't think it was important but now use it all the time.

WORST INVESTMENT: Power windows, feels ridiculous on this type of car.

WORTHY MENTION: Sony MP3/USB unit and 14" 5 spoke Motegi wheels, both lifted from my previous car, 2000 Civic HB.

jambo101

Worst: Sadly I don't ever learn, first gauge set up (2nd is way nicer looking), cheap eBay power/keyless kit"S", Weapon R seat brackets, Redline shiftboot (probably because of my choice of fabric), aluminum lug nuts.
http://img02.picoodle.com/img/img02/3/2/13/f_DSCF2344m_29c52d0.jpg
Worthy mention: Tanabe touring medalion, 6000k h.i.d.

Best- TRD sway bar, along with better tires.

Worst- Parrot Bluetooth speaker, it doesn't work very good when driving.

tomato
03-12-2009, 05:41 PM
Best investments: Haven't sunk any money in the car yet. That is my best investment.

Will probably get a GPS unit and maybe some plastic mats to protect the cute factory mats that came with the car.

Worse investments: getting an aftermarket alarm / keyless entry installed at the dealership without shopping around for prices first.

This is a really cool thread. All yours.

I love my power everything available; the Nitro in the tires; the installed 5000 GPS that is concealed in the passengers side glove box including a backup camera; the roominess inside the yaris; the color, all are nice, the scan guage, the radio and cd and the MP3; Put the trim on the doors and on the back where it opens in a liftback; Sold my new Lexus and the only thing I miss are the cornering lights on the Lexus...NOTHING ELSE...Love my 2DR liftback....

I personally can't see owning this car without the TRD shocks, springs and rear sway bar. I had the dealer install all three before driving it off the lot.

I drove a stock model a couple of months later and was astonished by how poorly it handled. With the exception of the rare frost heave, the TRD suspension sacrifices little in terms of ride quality.

upyaris
04-09-2009, 10:25 PM
Best (where to begin): TRD lowering springs, NST SSK cabin and engine, Infiniti speakers and Fusion 10" 400W sub, and window tinting.

Worst: None yet, I read reviews of products before buying.

Honorable mention: Weathertech wind visors (I like the way they look and help keep wind noise down - not to mention keep rain out when window is cracked)

wiirenet
04-10-2009, 03:49 AM
worst: paying some to smoke my tail lights, but only putting 3 coats because thats what the can said and i'm a paranoid girl. the guy told me it wouldnt look as bad ass i wanted, but I wanted to "follow the rules".. and now i regret we didnt do more coats whenever i look at my car =( and i dont trust myself to take out my lights, nor do i want to pay him again

best: buying my yaris!!! hopefully my FUTURE best mods will be window tint, debadging/blacking badges, and sway bar. eventually.. i hope.. lowering isnt out of the question either, i just really want to see how a lowered car drives first..

3 of my best investment so far:

9.2lb kosei K1 TS wheel, that shows noticeable improvement on the acceleration and braking ability.

Eibach Prokit spring, improve the handling and yet retain the practicability of being able to occasionlly take 5 people plus some loads around without rubbing.

Tinted window, it helps to keep the temp of the interior down a lot and provide some privacy.

Worst investment: None so far !!

Good Investments

ScangageII - payed for itself in a month or two in savings.

Radar Detector - PA State police and PennDOT have been cranking down road speed limits while adding to enforcement because our swine of a Governor (who himself has been clocked going over 100mph on the Pike - I can post links for the interested) wants more revenue from speeding tickets.

Time is money. The thing has already payed for itself in savings from bogus speed tickets.

Helmet - Dimbulbs who like to sleep at the wheel do not like seeing a middle aged man listening to Death Metal slip on a bucket while head banging. They tend to back off. So I have not needed to rely upon it directly but it works well.

SUV Seat Covers - they fit perfectly.

Bad Investments

Car floormats are not big enough. Gonna have to move on up to SUV or truck floormats.

Best Investment: Buying a Yaris and not doing any changes to the car !

Worst Investment: None !

Best - TRD package (springs, shocks (oops mine are blue) and trd sway bar
Worst investment - $50 Fog light kit that you have to pay another $50 for the 09 bezzels

I think there will be better investments in due time, the aftermarket will catch on to this hot hatch.

Best: Window tint; I hate sunlight. I wish it was darker, but at 20% I am already taunting the cops to pull me over - I don't want to push that anymore :)

Worst: my Hello Kitty floormats ... they get stained as soon as dirt touches them!

Honorable mention(s): My wheels, lowering springs, CAI, sway bar, shift knob and system in a couple weeks once I get everything installed lol

SpaceShot
06-17-2009, 05:50 PM
Best: ScanGuage II
After a year of practice I have surpassed the goal of doubling the commuting Mpg of my prior ride. Now I am trying to find the maximum possible...

Worst: Stubby antenna
Signal loss far outweighed improved look or immeasurable Mpg gain.

Worthy Mention:
Racing Disc hubcaps - very slight gain, but very distinct look, my friends know its my Yaris on the highway
Class I hitch bar & basket - carries 3 bikes, makes dump runs, holds coolers, and provides lot of utility from an `economy' hatchback

Jeemee

Yeah I'm 100% positive Alpine is Japanese, for the record.

Best investment : Cusco compact S coilovers , Recaro seats/takata harness's. The coilovers really improved the over-all feel and handling of the yaris and also lets me tuck tire . I was running df210's before and it was a night and day differnce. The Recaro "pole position" seats are simply amazing in all aspects . Looks , weight saving, and to just hold my whole body in place when hitting up some twistys . Of corse pair up the recaros with a set of 4-point takata harness's and that just holds me in place that much better and makes for some serious eye candy Imo .
Worst: 18" , Big, heavy, fragile trd/racinghart gt5 rims . They are sooooo heavy They really kill the spirt of this little yaris . I got them for 200 bucks but cracked the front driver in a pot hole which cost another $90 to fix . They look good but thats it . If I could go back, my first modd would be some cheap light weight rims like some rota slips, koesi k1 or good ol' konig heliums paired with falken azenis
Honorable mention: Garm and his company Microimageonline.com ! Such a cool guy and got me hooked up with most of my parts at amazing prices !

I have had my pulse plugs in for 45K..the 1st set had to be replaced because one of them failed..it turns out the ceramic insulator around the capicator was too thin..and the flaw has since been corrected....i enjoy the performance of the pulse plugs...they do not damage coils...45 k later proves that..you had a faulty plug... my coils are perfect ... im buying another set when i hit 50K..my best investment is AFE cold air intake..makes a major difference..its no longer starved of air under high loads..

Best Investment: I financed $6600 at ZERO per cent interest for 60 months through the dealer when I bought my Yaris in April 09.

Next Best Investment: They gave me $5000 for my trade which I purchansed in January for $6000. It had $$$$ tranmission noises.

Runner UP (but still awesome) The $10 Cruise Control Mod thanks to YarisWorld!

Alright TK although I'm somewhat depressed to post this because of the catastrophic failures:

Best Investment:
Suspension. This car is so damn fun to drive now that my favorite part of every day is commuting. I often make excuses to drive places also just to have more fun. Tokico blues + tanabe DF210 lowering springs. Thanks MicroImage!

Worst Investment(s):
#1) $1200 stereo system. The car can't be fast and loud unfortunately. I took out my q-logic box, 600watt alpine amp, and 2x 300W RMS alpine subs for more :burnrubber:
Going to take a decent loss because of this purchase. Admittedly I bought the audio equipment before I knew the car's full potential and before being an active member of yarisworld. It didn't help that I had NO package options on the car when I got it which means yes I was using a cheap pair of external speakers and my iPod to get music in the car for months so naturally I went way overboard when upgrading the audio

#2) Heavy wheels. I bought one of the cheapest wheels tirerack had to offer. 205/50/16. I admit they look AMAZING and I've gotten complements on them but they weigh 19lbs each!!
http://www.tirerack.com/images/wheels/sportedition/swap/se_cd_bs_ci3_l.jpg
These were also purchased pre-yarisworld active membership. Had I known then what I know now I would've gone with 15s on a 195 tire and saved up a bit more money to buy a light weight wheel.

Honorable mentions:
Gotta put the rear seat removal here because it's free and is by far one of the biggest upgrades you can make to the car's performance. can't say enough about it really. if you haven't done this yet, stop waiting.

Sir A.Y. Atoyot

Best: high-end Toyota radio with 6-disc changer, MP3, SRS, etc. Got it for $100 brand new in box. Took 20 minutes to install.

Worst: None yet, because the radio is the only modification I've made. The car came pretty well equipped from the factory.

BEST- TRD rear sway and Ecometer.
WORST- Round air vent trim rings from eBay. They fit by friction but keep popping out on to the floor when adjusting vents and they're difficult to glue in. Ended up chucking them. No biggy.

Yarrris-Wench
12-29-2009, 06:45 PM
Best Investment: The car itself

Worst Investment: I haven't started customizing it yet! :(

Worthy Mention: The fact that during x-mas shopping season i squeezed into more tight spaces that most people never saw was absolutely phenomenal :D

Best Investment: 2010 Toyota Yaris
Next best investment: JB3 kit for my e90 335i boosting 11-14psi ~360hp
Worst Investment: Yaris stock rims really need to go. (Looking at Advan RS-D 18in rims and most likely will purchase them)
Honorable Mention: Doing my homework in building my own supercharger kit instead of using Blitz (Looking at Powerdyne Automotive)

Upcoming investment: Rear sway bars is definitely on the list for better handling.

Best investment- Silk Road Coilovers
Worst Investment- C-one spoiler, wanted the J's to begin with........
Worthy Mention-Nitto Midpipe and Rota slips, the Rotas work perfect with this car and set it off very well and are light weight. The nitto Midpipe made my car have a more throaty sound and it gained some top end, also a great product if you want to add an axelback to it.

All good:Toyota rear lip spoiler, tint, TRD lowering springs, TRD rear sway bar, Piggy's short shift kit, Megan Racing axle back (muffler), Konig Feather 17" wheels, and AFE short ram intake.

Bad (and sorry, Redline, but this stuff didn't fit at all!) Redline shift and e-brake boots. Flushed $80 on that deal. Oh, and a cheap ebay RS grille emblem that didn't fit and broke when trying to install.

MORE BEST INVESTMENTS I FORGOT: Redline 75W-90NS in the manual transmission, speed shifting is super smooth at any temperature. It takes approximately 2 quarts of the THIS NON-DIFFERENTIAL SLIP additive fluid. I double checked my paperwork to be absolutely sure of what I used in the two days after buying my then new 08 Yaris. Royal Purple oil based on climate conditions with a TRD Filter. I only use non-ethanol gas and add LUCAS Octane boost exclusively via bulk Ebay purchase at five dollars a bottle every other tank fill, two years no problems, no check engine lights.
I only use NGK/Denso Iridium plugs in all my vehicles, GREAT the Yaris had them already installed !!
HELLA NON-ULTRAVIOLET 100w-High/80w-Low headlight bulbs and they beat and outlast anything comparable on the market even though they are under ten dollars a piece. No complaints from on-coming drivers when using the low-beam position. The key is that they are non-ultraviolet thus much less irritating HIDS with my light coverage too. The Sylvania SilverStar would be my second choice and these can be found at WAL---LY---MART etc.

I'd like to change my best investment to lightweight 15" wheels
15x7 wheels and 225/50r-15 Falken ZE-912 tires, fits no scrubbing, my application since 2008 too. In case you are wondering, the same height as the 185/60r-15s that came with the car just reasonably wider with no loss of power. The factory mudflaps work perfectly with this setup. Pre-paint the mudflaps before installing if you desire.

Since I have a new Yari, I have a new list:

Best: Tint (20% FTW)
Worst: Drop Zone springs .... stay away from them. They suck. They are super good springs, don't get me wrong - but they are WAY too low in the back, and constantly slice through plastic spacers and literally kick the metal ones out. I am getting TRD springs as soon as possible.

Best so far - The V rated Michelin Premier tires, Konig Feather rims (13.8 pounds), Strut Tower Bar GT Spec, TRD Rear sway bar and bar in front of that GT Spec, CB set up (poor man's radar detector) - those bars made it rail like, then the V rated tires and bigger foot print of the 16 inch rim made it even more like a go cart, about 50 mph around a 90 degree turn, yee freakin ha...:headbang:

Worst so far - Ladder bar (bar under seats), Bar in front of that (half on sub frame half on frame) both GT Spec, hitch ( I mean, it is a Yaris, wtf a hitch fer ? / I did that for handiness, rather than GT Spec rear bar which was similar) Bars overall seem useless (except the hitch, but just above useless).....:barf:

Up and coming - coil overs, and then play with brakes, then performance upgrades, starting with a home made cold air / stock filter set up

I've done 3 mods. So far I like them all.

1. Weathertech All Weather mats.

2. AFE dry filter.

3. Silvania Silverstar Ultra. Much better night ision than the stock lights.

Pending.

I got a Cruise Control stalk and a Clutch Switch coming my way. I also bought the panel with the pre-cut hole from my local dealership.

Tints.

Sway bar.

And not a mod, but more out of necessity, I also put on Toyo observe G02 Snow tires. I went one size smaller, down to 185 65 14 from 195 60 15. They drive great in the snow, but they scare me a bit on the highway. Never felt the side pulling that I feel now when I had the 15's.

best mods: Tooter manifold spacer: moar low power, idle shaking rpm is lowered as well as DFCO cutoff. JDM rear discs + full SS brake lines: rear discs look amazing and SS brake lines make braking on a dime something you can trust.

worst mods: diy precut window tint. yeah yeah...i was naive when i first got the car, ebay for like 40 bucks. Never got it to stick. $150 at a local shop did all the windows minus windshield for me.

Best Investment: Rear Roof Spoiler
Really improves the visual appearance of the car, and for $100, pre-painted to match the colour of the car, it was a bargain.

Worst Investment: Spinning Wheel Covers
One of them is pretty scratched-up, another one had the inner, independent wheel fall off and I accidentally managed to break off one of the retaining ring holders on a different one.

Worthy Investment: Centre Console Armrest
Adds a bit more comfort when shifting.

3M Clear Bra on the hood, fenders, and bumper....I have 75,000 miles on my 2010...freeway miles which are worse for chips etc. However, the front of my Yaris looks like the day I bought it. Good investment.

Rear Sway Bar - Improved handling.

Toyota Arm rest - functional but ugly. An aftermarket arm rest may be better.

Converted pulsating wipers to variable speed via Prius stalk... I have an extra one if anyone is interested.

Cruise Control - works great but I don't use it as much as I should....

Have to add to my worst investments: CCI Stage 3 Clutch Kit

Does not support anywhere close to hp/tq claimed. I wouldn't use this on any builds exceeding 10-11psi and around 220hp/tq.

CCI claimed verbally with me by one of their engineers that the stage 3 they sell should be good for up to 400hp/350tq. Mine gave out at roughly 250/250 and I don't do hard launches nor hard shifts generally.

Just added LED fog lights from Amazon, Hikari H11
They are 4 times brighter than my low beams that are 2 years old.
Today, I'm getting the H4's for said low/high beams, and another set of H11's for the wife's Camry so she can try em out.
They are IP68 which is good in the low country, submersible up to 3' (hope not that much) and a 2 year warranty and DOT compliant so no big brother issues.
Awesome, no more Halogen for me most likely.
(average low beam about 1200 lumens, 2200 for high beams)
(These claim to be 4800 lumens each bulb, and look like about right)
