how long before replacing brakes ?

I have a 2008 hatch with about 35,000 miles of city/hiway mix. Anybody have an idea how long the brakes should last ? These will start squealing before they get to thin, won't they ?

It depends on how you drive and your use of the brakes.

Obviously more rough and repeated use of the brakes will cause them to wear faster.

Our yaris sees about 75% highway usage. It currently has just under 65k miles and the brakes are still in great shape

Please check what section you are posting in when starting a new thread. I've moved this to the correct section.

Side note- Im 106k miles and on original brakes, still fine.

With such a light vehicle, under normal driving conditions it should not be uncommon to easily get 60-70K+ miles out of a set of brakes.

And yes, modern brake pads usually have indicators built in to where they will make noise when it's time to replace them. If you're curious as to how much pad you have left, go by any tire/brake shop and they will give you an estimate based on the percentage left...

Rule of thumb is when the friction material is down to one millimetre thick (thickness of a dime), it is time to change the pads or shoes.

Black_griffin is correct of course.

I will add that it is not nessarily how often you use the brakes that wear them quicker but, how you uses them.

If you frequently wait until the last second to apply the brakes and then apply hard pressure on the pedal, you will ware brakes out fast.

What you have to do is gently apply the brakes sooner to gradually come to a stop without the need to apply heavy pedal pressure.
Granted, this is not alway possible but, should be practiced as often as possible. It will make them last much longer.

102,000 miles still had some pads left but rotors were warped and rusty so I upgraded to corolla calipers and pads and bigger rotors.

This ^^^^^. My brakes were only 20% worn at 207k+ miles. Trini's brakes lasted 400k miles. Some people wear out their brakes in under 100k miles. IMO, a manual transmission, combined with certain driving habits helps. It also usually helps if you live in a flat area vs. an area with many hills (Houston vs. San Francisco, for example )

This ^^^^^. I also think having a manual transmission helps re making the most of this. I hear the old 'brakes are less expensive than an engine', but I'm getting many miles out of both and I don't rev the engine very high when downshifting during this scenario.
