F'in Offensive Swearing

Hey guys,

I am intrigued into the level of sensitivity americans have on swearing/offensive words.

In Australia, we have access to all things American - songs (duh), radio programs, tv series etc. So much so, that I feel a lot of american culture rubs off on us.

My intrigue comes with the american perception of what is considered swearing - what is now everyday common speech, or what words still need to be bleep'd out.

Obviously the derogatory ones are still bleeped, but I notice that the word 'ass' is bleeped on songs.

Some things I hear on aussie morning radio - peak time when parents send their kids to school - ass/arse, butt (not swearing), penis, vagina, brazilian (not really swearing), and yes, shit. Actually, 'shit' is used quite frequently on prime-time aussie radio and tv.

no F word yet, but we seem to be getting there. Do you find any aussies living where you are swearing more than you're used to in everyday conversation?

How's it over there? I'm not doing any sorta research or thesis, just trying to get a perspective. :)

Cheers!

I'm not sensitive about it at all. I have a very fowl mouth.

I often say things like, "Jesus Fucking Christ"

i might not be asking the right question :P

I'm wondering not about everyday conversation, but rather what is allowed to be said on air/in the media.

not much is allowed in the mainstream media

flip over to cable channels and you'll hear it all, satellite radio-everything but mainstream tv and radio is very censored

bitch is ok, but other than that just a few damns and what not

yes, the "B" word is said, ass is said, the "S" word is said when it's past midnight (hahaha), bastard is said...all referring to television. however, when it comes to the radio, even ass is censored...like in that one rap song..."shorty got looks, shorty got class. shorty got hips, shorty got ***."

ahh, ok thanks. that's what i was after. that's quite censored compared to here. I wonder if this has any relation to the amount of people being sued for anything and everything - USA's media seems to be required to be much more politically correct than Aust.
