Yaris 2006 mmt 1.4

Hi everyone,

I just bought a used yaris 2006 (41k ODO) with mmt gear. The problem is that when changing gear and specially from 1st to 2nd I can feel a strong jerk and feel all the engine is moving. An other ussue is when moving from standstill and even with gentle acceleration the car jumps. Is there something with clatsh? Or it s an other issue?
I am looking for your help because the dealer keep saying that it is normal.

Thank you.

I used to own one for my sins! 1.4 would be a Diesel? That's what I owned. Traded in for a cvt, much better. Presumably mmt = multimode transmission?
The gear change from first to second can be quite "jerky" to a certain degree. This can be improved by trying to anticipate the gear change and ease off on the accelerator pedal to help it change gear. In fact doing that to force a gearchange up does improve things. You have to change driving style quite a lot to make the mmt work acceptably. It can be quite stupid at times and does need driver assistance.
I never experienced any sort of "jump"when moving off from standstill, always perfectly smooth. I would push the dealer further on that. Does the car creep forward on level ground when in "E" mode with your foot off the accelerator pedal?(similar to a conventional automatic) It should.
The clutch can be reset by the dealer, if required, there will be a charge for this and it will not necessarily improve things for you. I had the clutch reset by the dealer after complaining about poor gear changes but the car was only a few weeks old so it cost nothing. It made very little difference though.

Hi mrpj
I tried to ease off on the accelerator and that helps to reduce the jerking but that's only when I remove completely my foot when the gear changes. I is also much better when I use the manual mode.

Regarding your question the car doesn't creep off when at standstill and I need to accelerate to move forward or backward which is a not smooth at all.

Thanks

It should definitely creep slowly on level ground, forwards or backwards, without you touching the accelerator pedal.
Yes, manual mode is much better when the driver decides and not the stupid, in this case, electronics.
If it's a Toyota dealer where you purchased I can only suggest you tell them it's not correct and they try a clutch reset. This does need their specialised equipment to carry out. As you've only just bought the car they should try the reset free of charge.
How was it on the test drive?
The clutch plate could be worn too, it can be subjected to more wear with the mmt depending on how the previous owner(s) drove it.
I do hope, for your sake, it just needs a simple reset.
I would also suggest posting your questions here http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/ which is a U.K. site.
This is more a U.S./Canadian site and as far as I know they were never inflicted with that horrible transmission.
