The "check engine" light has come on in my car and I was looking to buy a code reader/scanner.
Can anyone tell me what kind of tool I need for this car?

Your best bet is a scangaugeII
Talk to Garm aka cali yaris , from Micro image
it can read and clear codes + you can also use it as a gauge ie tacho,
volts, air temp, mpg ect ect , check out the link.

Auto parts stores will carry code readers. In the USA they are very inexpensive. It should be the same for you.

Micro Image forums, online store and shop are now closed. It was a great eight year run, but it was time to focus on other things. I'm still selling parts on eBay under micro*image seller ID and customers can still make requests for anything specific.

As of January 1, 1996 all new cars sold in the U.S. had to have OBD2. Most makers introduced it with 1996 model cars.

Scanner for OBI, MOBD Toyota and Lexus vehicles

Most of Toyota car has diagnostic connector (16 pins) that looks like OBD-II standard. But it will not work with OBD-II scanner. Actually, it M-OBD standard.
Lot of people do not know this, so they buy OBD-II scanner and ... it does not work
Just for help, I give you guy a solution: EFI scan - Low cost OBDI, M-OBD scanner for Toyota & Lexis vehicles:

http://dtdauto.com/Product/Product_d...I%20Scan_E.htm

Hope this will be helpful for you.

Guys, he lives in Iceland. No Walmarts, I don't think. If you have an Android phone you can get a program called "Torque" which can be paired up wit ha bluetooth OBDII reader off ebay. The program is 5 bucks, and the reader is about 20~
