the yaris is NOT earth friendly

there seems to be the misconception that the yaris is somehow an environmentally friendly ride,
although it probably consumes less than half the fuel of the average suv, it is still burning fossil fuel and spewing co2

so how can something that adds to toxins to the air be earth friendly?

doesn't seem possible

Umm, people aren't "earth friendly" by your definition.

Maybe not "friendly", how about "less unfriendly".

As you state, "half the fuel of a SUV" means less oil and thus more environmentally better than most cars. Less oil, less CO2 emissions, etc.....

Even the Prius uses gas which is a natural resource derived from oil. Nothing is perfect unless you ride your bike everywhere.

Don't forget that the manufacture of bicycles involves several environmentally questionable processes. Better walk ........ barefoot.

"Umm, people aren't "earth friendly" by your definition"

yeah, pretty much

i just think people use the term environmentally and earth friendly a bit too loosely, obviously to exist we need to use resources, but a car is not even coming close to being environmentally friendly,
if that is an honest concern, then as some have stated, riding a bike, walking or even using public transit is a lot better than the difference between a yaris and suv.

Perspective, people. It's all about prespective. Some might not think it's earth/environmentally friendly. Some might think it is. Depends on how you look at it and What and How you compare to everythin' else in life.

Personally. Is it truly environmentally friendly? good enough for me. I hate SUVs but not 100% treehugger either.

Since this whole thing is based on some unidentified person allegedly claiming that the Yaris is Earth friendly, I'm not sure what we're even talking about.

well i could go back and dig to find at least once where it has been posted, but i'm not going to bother,

but i was under the impression that a forum is a place for discussion and thought it might be an interesting topic, perhaps i was wrong.

Perhaps it's directly from Toyota.....

Toyota.jp Ecology page

BTW, I wasn't the one making the claim.

Judging from the number of responses in a short time, I think you were right. In a way it resembles a discussion I saw on a website for photographers, comparing the environmental impact of digital to film.

I have disliked most of Toyota's enivironmental adds that I have seen, especially the Prius ones.

If you want to get really strict, the best things human beings could do for the environment is kill themselves.

Since that will never happen, we have to go for the next best thing. Reducing smog and dependence on foriegn oil are both worthwhile pursuits.

Conservation is not a bad thing.

However their seem to be way to many lunatic fringe environmental groups getting a hearing. You know the ones that think they are doing a good thing by burning SUV's.

haha what the hell is wrong with CO2? lol it's the hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide (CO) and the nitrogen oxides (NOx) you gotta worry about.

even if you walk everywhere, unless you yourself make the shoes you wear, then you are still 'enviromently unfriendly' lol shoe manufacturers make pollution also!

Someone above stated it was all about perspective. I would word it differently & say it's all about context. The Yaris is a gas-powered automobile. If you were to look at gas-powered autos as a whole you could say that the Yaris is more environmentally "friendly" than others.
The whole phrase "environmentally friendly" strikes me as a marketing label you'd see slapped on products like "low carb" or "fat free". Both of which also apply to the Yaris.

Here in Canada, the Yaris has an Energuide rating of a ULEV (Ultra low emission vehicle). That means that it produces a LOT less pollution than your average passenger car / huge SUV.

That's better than nothing.

Here's a link to the EPA Air pollution scores. If you look at the small car market class the Yaris rates a 6/10 for the BIN 5 & a 7/10 for the ULEV II emission standards. Looks like the Focus is actually quite good too (depending on location).

The bottom line, at least in my opinion, is that using less gas can't be a bad thing. Less gas, less pollutants, less consumption, less money. Sounds good to me.
