what is the purpose of the miniature "reverse mud flap" on the rear wheel well?

I'm no aerodynamicist, but I assume they're for airflow management under the car. My passenger side flap was broken this winter. Maybe that's why I'm not getting 50MPG...

thanks, one other quick question. does the gas tank not have one of those metal protector flaps where you gass it up, or did mine break off, because i did not see one when i first filled it up.

I was wondering the same thing too but i guess that just means thats just the way it is. Makes it easier when your dumping fuel system cleaner in your tank atleast.
