5w-20 for all Yaris (Yarii)? - Toyota Yaris Forums

If I am reading this right, according to the TSB TS-EG018-06, the Yaris NZ engine can use 5w-20 weight oil. Please correct me if I am wrong. I know when I was in the dealership over the summer, the technician said the Yaris is not on the list for using the "newer" 5w-20 oil.

I had my oil changed at the dealer in December last year and they put 5w-20 oil in. I asked the mechanic why and he said it was cold enough in the winter here to run 5w-20. This is the 1.5 litre engine.

Personally i like a more viscous oil.

5w-20 is only going to be "lighter" when at operating temp compared to 5w-30, so i really don't see what the advantage would be, even in the winter.

The first number in a multi-viscosity oil is the rating at low temperatures and the second is at operating temperature (usually 200f).

That is why I questioned the mechanic to see what he would say. 0w-30 would have made more sense to me for running in the winter. It doesn't get too cold where I live. Goes down to -15 to -20C in the winter.
The main reason I mentioned this is because the OP wanted to know if you can use 5w-20 in this engine.
My other car (2006 smart diesel) uses 0w-40 synthetic year round.

For my 30K mile oil change, I used 5w-20 Pennzoil full synthetic. I have noticed an appreciable amount of pick-up after the switch. This could be due to the new engine air filter as well but it could very well be the oil too. I drove about 30 miles so far and I have not noticed a large increase in engine noise, vibration or harshness (NVH). After some more driving, I can let this forum know if anything changes. I can't tell the mileage characteristics yet but the increase in PEP is nice :)

Forget what your mechanic said. Go with the Toyota owner's manual. What does it say ?

I run 20w-50, but I have about 250K on the engine(estimated).

Have SHELL synthetic 5w20 ( SN ) in the '08 sedan . Plan to get an UOA and post it . Should be in a few months . Over 3,000 miles on the oil with the TOYO ( Denso ) oil filter .

So many people pestered Toyota about using 5-20 or 0-20 that they finally sent out a TSB saying it's okay to use it they wouldn't void your warranty if you did. That being said Toyota has never changed the recommendataion on the cap even on the 2012 which still says 5-30 telling me they prefer we stick to 5-30. My '08 RAV4 has both 0-20 and 5-20 printed on the cap, so if Toyota really thought the Yaris 1.5 should have different weights then why didn't they put them on the cap in later years after the TSB? Because 5-30 is what they prefer while the car is under warranty.
