what does a super charger do exactly?

A supercharger uses a belt to spin a turbine to create boost. Forcing more air (and fuel) into the motor makes more power.

It's on the cold/intake side of the engine, as opposed to a turbo that uses exhaust gas from the "hot side" to do the same thing.

Advantage to a supercharger is that it's always spinning so the power is always available, even at low RPM's. A turbo has to "spool up" when there's a load on it, so there is a delay ("turbo lag") before it kicks in -- turbos also create their power higher on the RPM curve.

I don't think it's more efficient, I think it just uses more fuel (with the higher air pressure) to make more power.

But -- someone might correct me on that one!
