"Fast Eddy" gets snow shoes!
So after a 2 week endeavor, I now have snow tires for my little Eddy (edamame)!
I found a set of four matching 1994 Mazda Protege rims at a local salvage yard on the cheap, and had them media blasted and powdercoated for less than the cost of new OEM rims. I didn't want to pay a premium price for dual-bolt patterns with over sized bores. The bolt pattern/bore matches 100% (4x100 bolt, 54.1mm bore) and they're 14x5.5 to boot (no pun intended). The shoes themselves are 175/70R14 Michelin X-Ice2's. After dropping off the old tires, there was very little loss in acceleration and shift point. I think they're a little low on pressure, but it could just be the way the taller sidewalls sit. All I need now is some snow/ice to drive in and I'll give them a performance review. Pics. Nothing spectacular, just my bean with black steelies and snow tires. Last edited by CrankyOldMan; 02-09-2012 at 07:23 PM. |

Sorry, I've misplaced my digital camera. Gonna have to find batteries for one of the kids' old ones, or ask the wife to borrow her DSLR.

run to a pharmacy and pick up a disposable! The fate if the world depends on it! Or perhaps do you have a sonic screwdriver like Dr. Who?

I really need to have my 17s blasted and powder-coated for the summer season.

Well, it took almost a week, but the TPWS butt light (_!_) finally came on. Good thing I already did the bypass switch!

Yay, finally got some real snow today! I'm happy to say that the egg handles like a champ in snow/slush/ice with these tires. If I could see even a hint of pavement under the snow/slush, I had traction in all but 1st gear, and even then it only slipped after 50% throttle. Well worth the investment!

Real snow tires are always a good investment.. Michelins are nice because they are soft which is good for Yaris (car with front driving wheels) .. not firm like some crazy Bridgestones
