Then there really is no reason for it. Most of the time you try and shift as seldom as possible.

Thats exactly what I am talking about. If its a tight short course you try and stay in 2rd, if its a bit more open you might have to shift into 3rd. Thats why some 6 spd cars are at a disadvantage on certain courses.
You sure as hell don't want to drop back into 1st gear in an auto-x.

What causes the shift cable to become dry? And is if difficult to lubricate it yourself?

I have never dropped back into 1st with my Neon. Perhaps the lack of trq. in the yaris will make it a necessity. I guess I will see once the season starts up.

It has to do with the rpms that the torque comes out.In the 1.3lt Yaris, it has more torque at about 2500-4500 rpms.
