low gas mileage?
Curious question here. 2007 Polar White HB Yaris with 1,274.7 miles on it. After the 1,000th mile I tried checking my gas mileage (since by fuel bar was blinking super fast so I had to gas up.) Turns out that only 274.7 miles later I have to gas up again but only gassed up 10.4 gallons. So basically I got 27.4mpg?!?!? Is that wrong or something? All I got done to my car is a Tanabe Concept G Axle Back Exhaust system and Cusco Coilovers. Would a major problem be the result of going up and down hills a lot (I do live in SF by the way)?

Yeah, your exhaust will hurt a little and the hills don't help either. The best MPG you can get is on the interstate where you can go consistently 65/70 mph w/o stop/go. The worse is hilly stop/go traffic. Also colder weather will hurt the mpg.
Make sure your tires have the correct pressure (check in morning when tires are cold) and you don't do quick takeoffs from stops. Plus I would average your MPG after 4-5 tankfulls. Just one tank doesn't really give you a great average. Kevin Quote:

The EPA is changing the way is estimates mileage. Under the new system, ALL mpg ratings will be lower, but smaller engines are taking the biggest hit, percentage-wise.

i've had my yaris for almost a year and a half, mostly city driving.
i have kept track of my mileage since the car was new and the lifetime fuel economy for my car is 33.4 mpg. it's been as high as 45 mpg and as low as 25 mpg depending on the type of driving, weather conditions and just about everything everyone has already mentioned. currently, my past few tanks have averaged 28 mpg. cold weather, short city trips will not do good things to your fuel economy, no matter what car you are driving. |

Their doing that so people wont be too ashamed and disappointed that they bought an american gas drunk SUV or car...
besides I get 44-46 MPG "going 65-75mph" on the highway with my 5yr old corolla auto... with the proper conditions though and proper tire inflation "about 30-32PSI" and also right oil "Mobil1 ever since and K&N oil filter " and fuel octane"91-93" and brand"I only use Shell,Chevron,Texaco and Conoco... I drove from Vegas - Lake Havasu, AZ. and used about 4gallons of gas round-trip... the other car where with "a 2006 Suzuki Forenza" used a tank of gas and their only going 55-65mph... freakin weird... AND I BELIEVE I CAN GET 50MPG on my Yaris "when I get it turbo'ed " |

only problem is that people who live in Hilly areas will suffer the most

yeah but that's the same with any other car, going up a hill, you'll use up more fuel no matter what, gotta overcome gravity. At least the yaris is light so its weight does not give such a high load to the engine when going uphill.

i was thinking the same thing (your first sentence). i used to be able to get near the 50's, but i think this cold weather is really maknig it harder to achieve that.

Where I live, everything is uphill--both ways. I also have a VERY heavy foot & like fast take-offs. But... I consistently get 30+ mpg (avg. around 32). Lowest yet was 29, highest was 36. Going to FL this weekend, will post mpg next week.

It is interesting that some folks yaris's don't get as good of gas milage. I've got 7,000 miles on mine now and I'm still getting 37+ miles per gallon. I'm easy on the acceleration. And only use the highest grade fuel. Considering I only put in less than 10 dollars a week its no big deal to use the more expensive gas.
