Massive Oil Leak on my 2009
Ive had a massive oil leak on my Yaris. The oil light came on and when I stopped there was a huge rainbow of oil in the rainwater on the road.
My car is in front of my house waiting for a AAA tow to the dealer as we speak. I will inform you as details become availible. Its NOT the oil filter or the gasket but the oils running down from above on the filter.

Perhaps a silly question, but was the filler cap still in place?

Yes. It wasnt anything I did.
Oil light flickered and came on and I pulled over immediately. Stopped for 10 minutes and checked the oil. No oil on dipstick. Rainbow of oil all over the wet road. Got out and hitchhiked and the third car was a woman I used to work with and her wife (you read that right) She picked me up, took me to my house where I got four quarts of oil and she took me back to the car. Its good to have friends! Added two quarts of oil, oil now to the fullmark. Started engine, oil light went out. My friend drove away and I headed for home about a mile away. Oil light comes back on. Get out and walk home, call AAA, meet them at the car and off to the dealer we go. Oil light comes on with full sump, doesnt dim or go out on revving. CAr is at the dealers but they say they may not get to it tomorrow so that means the Grom to work on Monday. Weather permitting. Something is leaking onto the oil filter. Oil pressure switch? Could it be the oil pump? WHy would an oil pump pump oil out? SIGH Oh well they have a certified iQ with 31 miles on it....

Ive learned in life whatever happens happens. Make it fun! as Bill Murry says! I must say though I drove this car to Alaska and back my myself through very empty wilderness. I didnt think a thing of it in terms of having a problem with my transportation. I just reared back and had a geat worryfree time. I hope its something understandable!

If it was the oil pump it would be leaking on the end of the block by the crank pulley. If it is leaking down the oil filter area it is more likely the oil control valve or its filter (which screws into the block below it) or the oil pressure switch.

I was thinking just a couple of days ago about how cars wear over time (and 'like' well paved roads more and more ) and part of what popped into my head over those few minutes was - 'it's good that Bronsin drove to Alaska early in the 'life' of his Yaris......likely a fairly bulletproof feeling'. |

Of course that bulletproof feeling things isnt necessarily something you want to tie yourself down to. On trips it really starts to get interesting when trouble happens...
