It took a beating for many , many years . Was used to haul away many items from gutting homes and carrying lumber , etc.. Adjustable air shocks were installed . Did enjoy driving it when weather was fine . It had an automatic .

My friend's El Camino also had an automatic. It was on 'the tree' (transmission shifting on the steering column) I can't remember if it had a 2 speed automatic or a 3 speed automatic. At that time I had an old,old Firebird Convertible to drive (my dad bought it to drive when he didn't have a company car, but never ended up needing it) and that Firebird had a 2 speed automatic 'on the tree'. It was the same model year as my friends El Camino. One big difference was that my dad had only owned the old Firebird for a year, and my friend's dad had owned the El Camino since new. The Firebird permanently broke down on my dad soon after I bought my own car the next year.
