Black box data?

Does anyone know the specifics of what is recorded in the Toyota black box recorder of an '09?

I assume my Yaris has the same box as the other makes and models.

har har funny...

I'm not sure about a black box per se, but the ECU does keep track of DTCs and some of the conditions at the time that triggered them. Is that what you had in mind?

I dunno, why don't you ask the men in the black suits who drive the black sedans and fly around in the black helicopters?

It's called the "Event Recorder" and its mode is triggered by airbag deployment. It records vehicle speed, accelerator opening angle, brake state, along with the standard freeze frame data.

I am sure that the lawyers and insurance companies would be interested in the information after an accident.

I suspect the main reason this data is stored is for auto manufacturers' use in defending product liability suits. If someone claims injury in a crash due to faulty car design or assembly, the data can be pulled up to show that he was driving unreasonably (or not, but I'd expect that in crash situations it often shows excessive speed, throttle angle, late braking and such that doesn't jibe with the driver's story.)

Here's an early article that I recall:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2004Jul26.html

Note that it states that the law required all manufacturers to standardize the data stored by 2008, and to make the information available to consumers.

Here is Toyota's corporate statement on the subject, as of September 26, 2008:

Thanks Yaris Hilton for the corporate link, informative although a bit too smooth for the truth.

I sat in a vehicular manslaughter trial where a small town cop had gotten a search warrant for the EDR data from Ford for an 05 Courier truck. Pretty much the same data. I was guessing Toyota tech. enabled recording more info.
