Sedan vs LB

Why does the larger Sedan get better mileage than a 3dr LB?

I think it's because the sedan has better aerodynamics.

Probably right. They both weigh within 20-30 pounds of each other and on the highway the sharp cutoff of the LB causes drag, where the sedan gives a smoother air flow. Back and forth to work I'm getting 39-41 mpg without trying too hard with my sedan.

I average about 35mpg in my sedan, but that's all busy city driving. On the highway I get between 45 and 50. I don't think aero would matter a whole lot in town (less than 30mph) but on the highway I can see where it'd make a big difference.

The Prius roof cuts off too and it has great aerodynamics.

Not sure how much of a difference this makes but the HB is a higher profile vehicle. I like the added headroom.

I'm on my third yaris as of this week - 2009 sedan MT.

2007 sedan MT 10500 mile average 39.12
2009 hatch MT 18000 mile average 36.69

Back to a 2009 sedan. Hope to do as well as the 07'
I think the sedan makes a difference.
