Question OZ CLUSTER

Well here it is- the OZ CLUSTER thread.

I bought the cluster from eBay AU yesterday and had it shipped to our member Mad Dog who has graciously agreed to reship to me in NJ.

I paid 248 for it including the shipping in Australia. I will also have to pay to have it shipped from Oz to NJ so the final price will probably be a good amount.

Why I did it- I have a base hatch with stick and since it's a 2009 with ABS although I've been loking and looking for months, I've been unable to locate an S cluster with a tach, and abs light used and my local dealer wanted $520 for a new one.

I really think any car with stick should have a tach and although I think several on the list really did a nice job putting one in the drivers glove compartment door, I personally want a OEM look. I also believe my local dealer will flash the cluster with the correct odometer miles if this works out.

So when I saw the OZ unit I went for it even though I suppose it's probablya 50-50 chance it'll work and face in the right direction (RHD in OZ).

So I'll keep you all informed how this goes- the good news is CTScott, who I greatly respect thinks it'll probably work.

Here's hoping.......to be continued

Glad to be a part of this. Hope it works. If it does you'll be the only one in the US with a digital dash with tach.

Oz, short for Australia.

As in, someone in the US got someone from Australia to ship them their cluster. Australia gets a sweet digital cluster that looks like something out of Knight Rider instead of the analog gauges we get.

I looked in the mirror this morning and saw a guinea pig!

:-)

I'll love it if it works and write it up to experience if it fails. At least as a guinea pig I'll save any one else grief by sharing and in trying to do it here.

I know I'll get the best support possible in the effort.

It would be great BTW if some one like Mike, who has been lucky enough to find the elusive S cluster in a junkyard and successfully did the switch - could post a sticky with good photos here on DIY for a ham handed guinea pig and others who find the holy grail of a S cluster- hint- hint!

Thanks for your good wishes!

One things for sure, if it works and there is enough interest I'll be selling them.

I think even Toyota - as unresponsive as they are- admitted the stupidity of selling stick cars without tachs by adding the tachs to all Yarises with stick in the 2010's. I wrote them about how dumb it was in 2009 and maybe someone was listening?

How much did they save by deleting the tach on my base hatch - $10? Was it worth it Toyota?

Beyond the issue of the tach itself though the Oz cluster is just spiffy looking and would be fun to look at as I drive!

Swapping clusters on the Yaris Liftback is a sub-ten-minute affair for someone that's never touched a screwdriver before. Yank the trim (literally) off, unscrew four screws, unplug two cables, you're half-way there. Reverse to finish.
