OBD tool
Does anyone have anything good/bad to say about using or buying an OBD tool for my 2009 Yaris. MY cream-puff is running well. I'm just questioning these tools,to see if their needed.

If something happens where the check engine light suddenly lights they are quite handy for figuring out why. That is really where the need comes into play.

I bought one a couple of years ago for my Yaris, then discovered it didn't work with Iphones. I just switched to a Samsung a few weeks ago and then I could use it.
The device I got worked, but there seems to be a lap time in the data coming in. Maybe the lag time is me and not the device as I have little aptitude to use either the app or the new phone. I only get the free apps so maybe one that costs money would be more informative but I will probably never know because I hate to spend money on apps.

I use a scan gauge just this week the check engine light came on on the wifes Echo, code read P0012 which among other things could be over filled oil,I asked the wife if she had had any work done on the car recently and she said she got an oil change yesterday, i checked the oil and sure enough it must have been 3 quarts overfilled, oil had splashed all over the engine bay as the fool also forgot to put the oil cap back on.. Yeah it was one of those quick lube places..

Man you are very lucky, your engine could have blown. Maybe you should spread the word about the oil change jerk. He should not be in business.

I have a scangauge 2 and an ultragauge (one in each car) and use them for MPG, water temp, and incoming air temp. They do come in handy when random codes pop up. My daily beater is a chevrolet cavalier with 250,000 miles on it. I like to keep an eye on stuff.

I also use a Scanguage 2. It adds things my 2007 sedan didn't have. Like water temperature and RPMs. Will also read the codes if one pops up.
