2008 Yaris Serpentine Belt Gone

I was driving my Yaris when there was a loud bang as I accelerated. The charging system light came on, followed by the low engine coolant indicator light. The check engine light came on as well. I was 15 minutes from home, so I chanced it and drove home. It drove fine and I made it home. The check engine light DTC: P0117-Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low. Under the hood, the serpentine belt was gone. My question is, can I just replace the belt, or does the timing need to be checked?

Serpentine belt isn't involved w/ timing...but 15 minutes w/ no water pump risks warped block/head and ?

Did it smell funny when driving w/o belt? Any spray marks on the bottom of the hood or anywhere else? What are coolant levels in the radiator and coolant reservoir?

I'd do an oil change. Inspect oil and open the filter.

Just replace the belt, check the coolant level and keep driving. If the head gasket is blown it's already after the fact. A blown head gasket will present itself with the usual symptoms of loosing coolant, white exhaust smoke, and (if it's bad enough) overheating.

About all you can do is replace the belt and see what you have, You should check all the pulleys to see if a bearing froze up causing the belt to break.

Our 07 belt spontaneously snapped this summer. It was a hot day so in just a minute or so we got the over-temp light and immediately pulled over. Had it towed to a service center.

Seems that the 10 year mark would be a good time to change these, even if they look ok.
