DIY waterpump RnR
this was from before the hack just thought i would put it up again.
1.let the car cool down. 2.disconnect battery. 3.disconnect plug and wire from alternator, lossen two bolts on alternator so you can remove belt. 4.remove 10mm bolt from bracket holding ac hose and slide bracket back. 5.remove two bolts from alternator and take it out of the car. 6.remove waterpump pulley three 10mm bolts and remove pulley from car. 7.remove the bolts from the waterpump. 8.get a jack with a some wood to support the motor as you will need to remove the bolts from the side mount and drop the motor to remove the waterpump from the car. 9.put new waterpump on and do all this in reverse. 10.fill up coolant. |

On Scionlife I have read about quite a few water pumps failing early. Same motor, same pump? Probably just a freak thing...
Edit- Well what do you know, 59,000 miles and my pump has some crust below the weep hole. These water pump failures seem to getting more and more common. Last edited by PetersRedYaris; 01-24-2009 at 12:35 PM. |

You have coolant all over the place. I just took my hood off because I was fiddling around with something and sure enough I have coolant on the under side of the hood. I have nowhere the amount you did and there was none on the pulley or in the vicinity. Either way the bitch is being changed out next week.

ztrack.. Did you also install a NST pulley and possibly over tighten the pulley belt?

What's the deal with water pumps failing on NST pulley equiped engines? I don't think mine was affected by the pulley as the WP bearing noise started just a few miles post the NST installation and the antifreeze "crust" looked like it had been there awhile, though I didn't see it when installing the pulley.
My belts are definitely not to tight as I like them on the loose side. So long as they don't squeel, they're tight enough. |

i think mine was bad before the nst pulleys.maybe just the way the belt is tensioned from the factory.

I have NST as well. And in the last 2,000 miles I heard a noise I knew shouldn't be coming from the engine bay. It was the water pump. I don't know what is considered to tight I can still wiggle the belt. And I had thought it was to tight so i loosened it slightly and then spun the belt so it wasn't to tight after installation.

THe pump's not covered by the warr. guys?
Why did'nt you just let the dealer shoulder the labor/cost? Don't you get 5/60,000 on the drivetrain???

Yes we have that but with NSt they can say we over tightened the belt. Thus no warranty.

this problem isn't specific to nst equipped cars so don't start assuming its gonna happen to you if you have or are gonna buy. my buddy who's a toyota mechanic says water pumps and yari are starting to become a regular thing at his shop.....

How much does a water pump cost? Did you get from Toyota or some place else like Auto Zone or NAPA?

Did he give you any idea on about what milage the pumps go? That's unacceptable, especially for a make like Toyota, supposedly "the best". Thanks for the heads up, BTW. Now I gotta start watching a waterpump on a brand freakin' new car........

I agree, it's just kinda funny that most of us have an NST pulley installed.
