Water in Spare Tire Well

Anyone else have this problem?

This is the first problem with my 2007 liftback with nearly 90,000 miles.

I haven't done anything recently so I don't have a clue what caused it.

I noticed a musty smell in the car and thought one of my kids left something nasty in there.

Upon investigation, I found several inches of water in the spare tire well. I pulled the drain plug, dried it out and replaced the plug. The water was back after the next rain.

I'm now driving around with the plug out, but want to fix it right.

The weather strip around the hatch looks fine.

Any ideas?

You've got a leak for sure. It may be hard to find. My 2007 sedan (now my daughter's) did this after a rear end collision was fixed, so the body shop guys worked on it 3 times before finally getting it fixed. One would get inside the trunk while another sprayed a hose around, till they found where the water was coming in. There are places you could get a leak around the sides, not just around the hatch.

Yup, and that is the ONLY way to find a leak like that; I was trunk monkey 50 years ago, some things never change!

Do you have aftermarket taillights? One of mine leaked and drained into the hatch too, sealing the edge of the light fixed it.

I've had a lot of old cars and water usually leaks from the window seals. The seals are exposed and with long exposure to the sun they dry and get brittle and have leaks that are hard to detect. Hope this helps.

Thanks folks. You've given me a lot to work with.

My tail lights aren't stock. They're authentic Vitz LED models from Toyota Japan but they might be the source.

I guess I'll need a helper and a hose.

Thanks!

I am getting a musty smell in my car now that it is getting warm out, I bought my car used in the winter. I noticed the other day while installing an amplifier that there was water underneath the plastic tray to the right of the spare tire. Suspecting it maybe the tail light, I took it out and could see there has been water leaking in through the gasket for a while. I took a pic.
Despite this thread being dead for 3 years... I think this shows the problem pretty clearly
