If you want to get your mpg thrills, set your trip computer before going down a hill on the freeway. Did that recently and my average for the next 25 miles was over 50 mpg. I stopped for lunch on the flats, reset it again, and I was over 40mpg the rest of the way home. I know that's kind of cheating, because you're not getting an average for the whole tank, but it's fun .

I've been averaging 40-41 MPG on my weekly work/errand commutes around town (approx 240-250 miles driven per week, fall/winter, no A/C). Manual 5-Speed 2015 here. During the hot Phoenix summer last year (110-118 degrees Fahrenheit) with A/C running, I was averaging 38-39 on the same trips.

Just got back from an 800mile round trip with some mountains 1/3 of the trip. I did 45.7mpg and and I maintained a speed of 60-65mph. Same trip and same speed with my Audi A4 last week I couldn't get better then 24.7mpg.

My commute is 90% highways minimal to no traffic (~100-130km/h) and farm roads on the way home with hard acceleration at all the stop signs on the way.

My last tank I just averaged about 5.7 L/100km. When I used to drive for optimal mileage my Yaris was getting 5.4L/100km but that was slow acceleration, going 100km/h on the highways and following trucks when possible.

That's why I love this car. You can drive it hard and still get insane mileage.

Fwiw, my Wife's '02 Echo with 381k km on it driven about 60-70% highways at 120km/h and not driven very hard it getting about 6.8 L/100km. Not too shabby for a car that's got worn rings.

I do 18 miles a day, all in city. I have an automatic... I am a slow driver, eco light stays on. I started at 33mpg with the first few tanks (winter time). I try to not let it go below a half. Now I'm finding it to be about 35-37mpg.
(Just a tad disappointed, my previous car, oil leaking, exhaust rusted out 17 year old 4cyl auto Mazda Protege did about 33-35 in town all year round. I guess I was expecting more from a new car... New car, higher hopes, lol.)

A quick update to my last post. So for the past couple years, my commute changed from 22 miles per day (36mpg 90% freeway) to 15 miles per day (34mpg 40% freeway) to 13 miles per day (31mpg 100% city). Even on a 400 mile trip, I only averaged 38mpg (no ac, windows up, 80° weather, 95% freeway, 60-65mph, drafting behind trucks, pulse and guide). On a 600 mile trip, I averaged just shy of 40mpg (no ac, windows up, 70-80° weather at night, 99% freeway, 60-65mph, drafting behind trucks, pulse and guide).

My 2007 hatchback is all stock, 5 speed, no brake dragging issues, and I do slow starts, shifting around 2k rpm, utilizing all the hypermiling techniques I've learned (DFCO, pulse and guide, 42psi front tires, 48psi rear tires, going slow up hills, gaining momentum downhills, staying in the highest gear possible).

I just changed the oxygen sensor, pcv valve, oil filter, and flushed the transmission which will hopefully get me closer to the numbers I see here. I really have no idea how you guys are getting close to 50mpg in the city. Either your roads are all flat and you're getting up to speed then coasting with the engine off or you're running super lean. I was able to get 51mpg out of my friend's 95 civic vx on a 400 mile trip (60-65mph, hour long traffic, drafting behind trucks, with AC on 40% of the time) which is over 10mpg better compared to the Yaris so I know it's definitely not my driving habits.
