Thinking of switching to a yaris

My wife had an '08 Yaris sedan until we traded it for a Camry in '11 when our youngest son came along. About two years ago I traded my Tacoma for a Jeep Wrangler. I dont really go wheeling that often and am strongly considering swapping to a much much more fuel friendly Yaris. I have been looking at '15 and up 5 door hatchbacks. We do camp quite a bit so I'm wondering how I will like the Yaris for that. With my jeep I just have a rack that goes in my receiver that I strap my tent and stuff on, I think the Yaris probably has that much room in the back. Any thing I need to look out for on the newer Yaris models?

Yaris' are very reliable. I can't advise anything to look out for. Id suggest buying an SE trim model as there are quite a few advantages to them.

Not really. The older ones like my 09 (a few of them) had trouble with leaking waterpumps. If you think of it lift the hood and check underneath for red coolant stains on the passenger side. I doubt youll find anything but just in case...

The 15 model year might be assembled in France if that would concern you. I doubt thats an issue either.

I live in a very hilly area (Hawaii). Unless you live in a completely flat area or around town, you wont get very good fuel economy. I find I really have to wring it out to get onto the freeway safely. The 3rd gen Yaris automatic trans seems to keep the car in very high rpm while trying to go up a sloped freeway. All the freeways are up a hill where I live. Having the torque-less wonder 2NZ motor doesn't help. I found my 2006 Camry had the perfect balance of fuel economy and power for my area.

Yaris has a very light steering feel and a semi-responsive throttle, also good brakes for its size. I noticed its a joy to just hop in and turn on and go. Good for piling friends in to get munchy food or go to a concert. It's great around town and parking it is easy as all hell.

With drop springs and good tires I found out its a ton of fun to drive on a twisty mountain road. Driving a slow car fast gets you maximum smiles per gallon. It effortlessly takes sweeping S turns and sharp corners.

Tired after work? Who cares? its a Yaris, you can zone out and zombie home while listening to music. Throw a bunch of boxes in the back and its a workhorse. Maintenance is cheap cheap cheap and you can put any kind of crap gas in it. Get a ding or a dent? Who cares? It's a yaris and they made many, its not like the world is going to run out of them. Stoned out of your mind and cant drive? Who cares, put on some reggae music and magically end up at your house in 20 minutes because its so easy to drive a 9 year old could figure it out.
