Its what you get when you're bored of working on the engine.

As echo_hrs said, it changes the gear ratios in the tranny for different driving situations. Those gear sets are probably made of a stronger alloy as well so they'll handle more HP than the stock gears.

So this thing would be good after I do whatever modifications I have planned... Turbo, exhaust and all... Right?

Possibly... It depends how you want to balance your top speed vs acceleration for a given engine power.
With a stock engine, if you want to go racing on a normal track or auto-x, you don't expect to be able to reach 100MPH at any point. So, it makes sense to have shorter gears, as you can accelerate faster. As you build up your engine's power, you will find that with the stock gearing, you will reach the car's maximal speed pretty fast. So either you can keep things this way, or you can go with a longer gearing to get you extra top speed at the expense of acceleration. My advice, go get Gran Turismo 4 or Forza motorsport if you have an xbox, buy a car, then a fully adjustable gearbox, and have a play around with the final gear ratio settings, see how it affects the car
