My Basking Shark Gets a New Grill

I liked the looks of the SE grill a lot better so I bought one. My son helped me install it and it took about 2 hrs to install, mainly because I moved slow and not knowing what I was doing exactly. I’m pretty pleased with the outcome. The only thing I was disappointed in was in the past the right side of the bumper would pop loose where it met the fender. Well, it was under warranty and so I took it in and they must have used some adhesive because when I reinstalled it, it has slightly a little more gap. I’m going to watch it and if I still don’t like how it is, I’ll pop it loose and re-adhear it.

Congrats! It looks pretty mean now. It's always good to have the young ones help!

Any possible way to get rid of the basking shark look? Anyone have any pics of how they look, when the big black part is painted the color of the car?

Thanks! I’m pretty psyched about it. I had thought about how to paint the middle area on the grill but it would be crazy complicated. The grill is all one piece, but if anything, I’d love to get rid of the license plate mount. But again, one piece. Now moving on, whats in that other box to the right... hmmm??

A European licence plate would certainly tame that monster of a grille.

Btw, enjoy every minute you spend with your lovely son. Too soon, the experience will only be a memory.

Thanks again everyone. Yeah, I am really trying to soak up the time with my family. I never could’ve imagined we’d be tinkering in a garage together listening to classic rock. I mean, music that I grew up listening to. Not to get all sentimental or squishy, but the older I get, the more I find life has a deep sense of humor.

It’s actually pretty easy to get off. The tough part is putting it back on. It’s pretty much a two person job. There are 4 push type clips on the top that are accessible with the hood up. On the bottom there are 8 or 9 bolts. Once you get those out, you just gentle work your way around from each fender pulling the bumper away. You have to be gentle though, pretend your making love to it and undressing it. Putting it back on, just hold the bumper at each end and walk it into position and once its lined up, just go around the edges making sure it fits into the clips. Again, make love to it. For some reason, where the edge fits to the fenders, its a a pretty weak clip so right now, I have a little gap and I think I’m going to have to apply some adhesive. Good luck if you attempt it, it’s not too bad.

I wish Toyota had a better design for keeping the corners on. Every Toyota I’ve owned has had the same problem. Even if the car has never been hit

Seems to be a phenomenon with the Gen3. Gen1 and Gen2 did not have this issue.
