sometimes a lease can be advantageous, my own scenario for example. I owed a LOT left on my truck and I was spending 300$+ per month on parts alone, plus 16 MPG gas at 80L tank. To purchase would have put me in line for food stamps but a lease cost less per month than my truck's purchase financing. This way here I can ride out my debt and when the lease is up I can just hand them the keys and move on to purchase something. Is that so dumb?

If you drive less than 15,000 miles per year, you want a new car every two years, and you've done a lot of research (you know exactly how leases work) then it's perfectly ok to negotiate a deal for a 24 month lease. NO longer than 24 months though.
