Amazing Gas Mileage .. way too easy.

So .. I have been like many here trying to get better gas mileage with my Yaris. I have normally been getting about 37.86 US MPG (lifetime average so far. Mostly city driving).. so I thought that was pretty good. I have only owned my Yaris for about 1.5 months, so I am still learning.

However I have noticed something with the help of my ScanGauge. I normally drive about 90% in the city (normal stop and go traffic). I normally seem to travel about up to 50-60 km/h in normal traffic conditions, so I have been driving in 3rd gear at those speeds. Well behold ... that is obviously the wrong thing to do.

I have been able to get substantially better gas mileage by just putting it into 4th gear. (resulting in a lower rpm according to my tach) I am now getting as much as 54.70 MPG (4.3 L/100 km) with in city driving. I am just about to fill my tank .. so the next tankful should be interesting to see if I can maintain my much better mileage.

I do tend to drive at non-peak hours so that will keep the traffic levels somewhat lower.

I normally shift at 20km into 2nd, 40 km into 3rd and 60 km into 4th. But it appears that shifting into 4th gear around 50 km (30 mph) is a sweet spot where I have been able to get much better mileage.

Has anyone found similar results .. in the quest for better mileage ?

Really, getting into the highest gear possible, as quickly as possible is a no brainer.

Nice advantage of MT over AT when it comes to fuel efficiency. Wish I could do it.

Arrow Cograts... Your on the way to perfecting Hypermiling....

Hey HEY its me Jay. Thats awsome. I have the 2010 sedan with 5 peed auto. I got 51 MPG by coasting in city and slow ramp rev up to slow lane called " getting to the 5" with pro drivers because its the 5 lane on the freeway and you whant to be in 5th off the merge lane on the freeway. I have to use 3rd on the auto to "fast track" meaning build speed and at low gear ratios to keep the mpg...ONE HINT TO MAX OUT ON MPG.. Look at your tach not the speed. Listen to the engine and glance at the tach ever three seconds to " LEARN THE BURN" of gas so to speak.. Keep your engine slightly below 1800 and then shift up with slight acculator pressure to keep rolling. Easy does it the engine will start feeling easier to predict how fast you can go with it. Its the flow between you and your ride thats saves gas. something like when learn to first ride a horse. feel the " horsepower" which is where the term came from ( history lesson credit coming). Learn to tap your foot and not to push on it. just like a horse, you just bump it with your heals or ball of your foot not pressure it to move....Get the idea...You'll be amazed on the MPG with practice. Blow your mind on how good the yaris is " TO RIDE" not just to ride in. VERY COOL....MR.JAY 35 year commerical driver like anyone cares right....ENJOY YOUR RIDE REMEMBER YOU CONTROL THE MOTION....USE IT....C-YA BETCHA REGRET READING THIS ONE < DONT YA.......MR> JAY Ice road TRUCKer FAN and YARISWORLD "NOVELIST" thats yarisworld....AND ALL AROUND SMART ASS and MPG-ER..

Yes, shifting early seems to help a bit with Mpg, so long as you don't lug the engine too much. For U.S. drivers, I've found the following pattern a good start until you learn to hear the proper shift points. 2nd by 10 Mph, 3rd by 20 Mph, 4th at 30 Mph, and 5th at 40 Mph.

Getting the ScanGuage is the best thing you can do. Soon you will start to see points along your route where letting up just a little on the gas, jumps up your MPG. There are probably several slight downgrades that you don't notice, but the ScanGauge will help you see where you can let up and still maintain comfortable cruise speed.

Im pretty happy with my mpgs, i hit around 38-39 mpg while driving 99% city. My daily commute is about 5 miles back and forth everyday, so I don't rack up much mileage at all. Sometimes I can go a whole month without filling it up. I did go on a 375 mile round trip with 95% highway and was able to get around 45mpg too :). BTW, I drive the 2007 sedan with 89k miles on it

Just an update .. I have been able to get averages according to my ScanGauge between 47 and 54 US MPG. However on my last tankful I am getting more like 42.87 US MPG.

So yea .. I guess an average is just that .. average. I wish that I could somehow get tank MPG similar to my averages. I find that when I am able to take advantage of DFCO then I am able to get better MPG ratings.

Unfortunately I live downtown and there tends to be more traffic .. so I always get lower MPG whenever I get closer to home as I am never able to maintain the great mileage I tend to see in the outlying areas.

I filled up today and got a little over 43 MPG US. I also had a new experience. There was quite a bit of thunder in the sky while I was filling up....and for the first time ever the power went out right in the middle of my fill up. The 14 other pumps were also in use and all 15 of us were cut off. I had to call my credit card company and eventually the system came back up on a generator and I was able to finish my fill up with a new transaction.

Kinda makes you wonder why people continue to use/drive vehicles that get mpg figures in the mid teens to low 20's as daily driver single occupant vehicles.
Like my red neck brother who lives out in the woods in Florida who's last 3 vehicles have been full size dualie pickups..He calls my Yaris something a Communist would drive, also when driving around with him lord help us if he sees a Prius which results in a half hour diatribe blasting the driver as a socialist tree hugging liberal commie environazi hypocrite.

The guy that sold me the Yaris I have now .. is a Prius driver now. (He bought a Prius C) .. and gets something like 64 US MPG or maybe more. It is an ok car but I still love my Yaris more. I think that they are driven by people that are sick of paying at the pump.
