The dealer filled up the first tank when i purchased mine and saw 37mpg. The second tank which I filled to one click netted 39. Now I get between 41 and 43 mpg but I drive slower (65mph average) and 80 percent on the Hwy.

That is exactly what I got. 32-33, and it has pretty much stayed consistent since. Went up a touch.

Averaging 32-36 here, and I'd bet that's the norm; those here claiming to get up to 50 mpg must be yanking our chains, LOL. If these cars regularly got 40 mpg (or more), the stickers on the windows would be touting that claim. Kind of disappointing, since my old car got 40, but the Yaris is so darned cute!

my first 3 tanks were all around 36... once I started using DFCO.. it jumped to 40. Slowly over the next 4 months it went as high as 44. Most of the change is due to driving habits.. there might have been as much as 3mpg due to break in & synthetic oil... the rest is due to warm climate & driving habits.

1st tank filled by dealer(s) for both '08 automatic sedan and '08 5speed manual L.B. averaged litte over 43 . Drove those very conservatively for the break in period of 500 miles . Drove different speeds and tried to keep under 3 r.p.m.s as much as possible . Don't think we've duplicated that yet , close but no cigar . That was with the conventional factory oil . Use syn for both now . Sometimes ponder if they would get better mileage by going back to regular oil . . Just stick with the syn. Lot of short trips . Less traveling with winter weather .

Drove mine home from the dealer the evening of August 1, 08. I threw the first tank out because the dealer filled it; it was 38.18 mpg for 336 miles. The 4 tanks after that averaged 42.1 mpg (41.22 – 42.74). Mileage jumped a little and the next 14 fill-ups averaged 44.6 mpg (42.92 – 45.63). I also go the ScanGauge at this time so that might account for the jump. I fill-up once a week and average 330 miles/week. The last tank, with just over 6,500 miles on the odometer, might have made another jump. Out of nowhere I seem to be getting better MPG numbers, set 3 straight days of record high mpg on my 30 mile commute. I did not change anything about my driving to warrant it and the weather was not much different than the previous weeks. Last tank was 315 miles and calculated to 46.91 mpg. I was thinking maybe I filled up inconsistently (less gas due to pump shutting off earlier or something) but this week I am still getting higher than usual commute mpg numbers. Current tank as of this morning the SG2 reports 46.7 mpg average. It has been very accurate about mileage (distance driven), tank mpg, and gas used after the first few fill-ups were used to calibrate it.

Now, I’m working for these mpg numbers not just driving. No engine off coasting or pulse and glide techniques… yet. Just driving with a really light pedal, using momentum for the hills, 42 psi in the tires and using the brake pedal as little as possible. I do have two sections where I can take it out of gear and coast for about ¾ of a mile but that’s about it. Most of my driving is in traffic so I do have to go at least the speed limit. I can see where people are getting over 50 mpg with flat terrain driving, taking it easy on the skinny pedal and using advanced hypermiling techniques. They are working for it but it is possible even with the 1.5 gasser we have as our only engine option.

The EPA estimates don’t reflect the high mpg figures some drivers are getting because they drive a little differently than ‘regular’ folks. I operate my motor vehicle with safely getting the highest possible mpg as my priority. I don’t drive with getting there as fast as possible as a priority. My commute takes me 5 minutes more each way, 10 minutes a day or about an hour a week. Time well spent as I am more relaxed and much more aware of vehicles around me on the roads.

I'm currently on my 5th tank of gas and so far have been getting 37-38mpg per tank consistently, regardless of driving conditions.

I got mine last week and got 38.94 mpg on the first tank. Should do better once I remember to take it out of 4th gear. Coming from a Scion XA forth gear feels like my old 5th gear. I do mostly highway to and from work.

I have a feeling drt1120 is talking about putting on 5th gear instead of 4th of 5-speed manual and otterhere is talking about putting on D isntead of 3 of 4-speed auto.

Second tank 40.9 but still forget to take it out of 4th. After going 105k miles in my XA it is going to be a hard habit to break.
